Penthouse pop top repair ideas?

I have a 2001 Sportsmobile and the Pop top is flacking off the clear coat. I wondered if anyone else has had this happen and what I should do to maintain or repair it.

I saw one top in Las Vegas that was Rhino coated???

Thank you,

Kennan & Karen

I just went from severely cracked gel coat to whatever SMB does now, it's not Rhino liner brand, but I can never remember what it's called.***

*** Raptor Liner Tintable... the color is not exact but it works well.

Raptor liner is available in a DIY kit, but DIY on a PH top would present some challenges unless you have a scaffold. From what I've read, it's gotten some good reviews from people who have done it themselves.

Re: Penthouse pop top repair ideas?

Many years ago I had a K5 Blazer with the white top flaking all over. Being poor at the time I remedied the problem by using Rust-o-leum oil based white high gloss enamel paint. Since the top is not completely smooth and is lightly textured you couldn't see the resulting "brush" strokes. I used one of those 3in by 5in plastic paint applicators. It worked great. It stopped flaking. The high gloss was muted because of the light texture surface of the top.

I wish I kept the K5. I needed the money and a couple of suspicious guys came down from Mendocino County (think marijuana) to buy it. Their only question was "Does the 4WD work?", unrolled a giant wad of $100 bills and off they went.

Hope this helps™

Re: Penthouse pop top repair ideas?

I got a quote from a local Line X dealer for $1000 for my top. I will be doing the DIY kit from Raptor for under $200 and some elbow grease.

Re: Penthouse pop top repair ideas?

Ordered the Raptor DIY kit today and will hopefully tackle it in a few weeks. The top has cracked enough to leak now so it is a must. I didn't get the tint-able mix, I got black. Since my van is all dark green and black it won't be that big of a deal.

Re: Penthouse pop top repair ideas?

Saline, if your top is cracked enough to leak I think you should get the cracks sealed before you coat the top. The Raptor may not seal the cracks, and it will probably make it more difficult to find and repair any cracks after the coating is on the top.

Re: Penthouse pop top repair ideas?

Are you sure the gel coat cracks are causing the leaks? I would think the water is coming in from somewhere else. I'd definately want to find the problem before coating the top. If water really is entering through the cracks, I agree with Mike about having it sealed or re gel coated.

I still don't know where my leaks were coming from. The Gel was badly cracked and I replaced all the hardware, butyl'd the hell out of it, and it was still leaking. Very hard to determine as the water runs round in between and comes out on random occasions but I could make NO sense of where it was leaking.
