Attaching Rack to Penthouse

I'm meeting with a welder to begin building my custom rack for a regular body SMB-installed Penthouse. I'm putting 4 "feet" per side using flat stock. I haven't been able to look at a SMB w a rack and don't know the way SMB does the connections to the bolts going through each foot.

Would someone please raise your fiberglass top and see what has been used underneath for connectors? A photo would be really nice.

If I have to "reinvent a good wheel", I'll start with a 1/4" piece of flat stock aluminum, then a flat washer, a split washer, and a nut put on w Thread Lok Blue. All the connectors would be stainless and 7/16". Donno how close I am to the real deal that's worked great for many racks. Please help me out.

Re: Attaching Rack to Penthouse

Well, my meeting with the welder about my custom rack went well. I still need the various pieces of hardware that SMB uses to secure the rack feet to the fiberglass edge.

What he says he would like more, however, is photos of the place the foot is welded to the rack. He can do what he thinks best, but he agrees with me there's no reason to invent a weld connection that's worked well for many SMB owners.

Can a couple of you, please, shoot some photos of that and see of you can tell what fasteners were used. Thanks.

Re: Attaching Rack to Penthouse

....have you checked out the photos and the racks from aluminess?
http://www.aluminess.com/roof-racks/

I'm having Derek at CCV build me a rack similar to the one for the voyager top, it's going on top of his new high profile pop top, he will be attaching the rack with through bolts and not the "feet" like aluminess.

Re: Attaching Rack to Penthouse

Thanks, Rick. I looked at A but the shots are just. it close enough. I need someone w a penthouse rack to post some close ups.

I can't do direct bolts because I don't wat to add any more weight to the "field" of the top. I need to distribute the weight vertically, down the sides.
