4x4 Convertible Van?

So I gotta ask,

Anybody else here see the possibilities, maybe a 4x4 conversion, a good military type tarp with some type of rollcage . Sleeping under the stars?

What do ya all think?

Re: 4x4 Convertible Van?

Lol, this is so funny! I just saw this same van today on the Ellen show. NO, I'm not a regular Ellen viewer but it is pretty entertaining, I must admit. I was waiting at the window tint shop getting my windows done and it was on their TV. Anyway, my first thought was How do I post this on the forum? Thanks!

More ways to lose your roof:

OBS vanamino:

Looks like there's a few of the tour vans out there:

This one seems a little questionable seeing how the Sprinter is unibody and Daimler won't even let you put larger windows in:

QuadVan also made a 4x4 one for SEMA a few years back:

It's too bad they don't make Boaterhomes anymore:

I agree! If I ever accidentally back off a cliff or get rear ended by a semi, I think that's how I'll fix it!

Re: 4x4 Convertible Van?

I remember talking to someone (John?) at Quadvan back when we were first looking for a 4x4 van ('06 or '07) and he talked about that orange and black SEMA van. Per the 'order' from the van division guys at Ford who ordered it, it had Harley badging on it. Then the Ford truck division guys came over at SEMA and had a hissy fit and said only Ford trucks had an agreement with Harley and they would have to remove or hide all the Harley badging.

Cool looking rig.

No doubt a company specializing in working on similar projects was incorporated---has to be a full length frame or substantial structural reinforcement under that creation.

I harken back to the mid 80's onward when American Sunroof Company was involved with building Saab, BMW, Camaro & Firebird's into convertibles even though there was no factory option for them. Along with building and installing the convertible top a lot of work was required to comply with then current FMVSS's relating to the Unibody's ability to perform in collisions.

Interesting look though----would be great for a tropical or year 'round warm climate.

I would hope so, but I have my doubts. If the operator did the work themselves, they would be pretty much outside any regulations. Meeting FMVSS's only needs certification if the vehicle is sold, or the service it paid for. If its your own vehicle, there are no regulations. DOT inspections only apply if the vehicle seat more than 15, which is probably why they are converting vans instead of buses.
