97 E150 Conversion Mark III -- 4x4 camper van

Well after looking at all of these sportsmobiles, quiglys and diy ujoint conversions I was bitten by the bug. Our family like to travel a lot in the southeast Panama city Beach. Biloxi etc and I thought I would start shopping for a project. It would be nice to have a camper van to stay in a night or two when the room rates are high at car show events etc. It seems the van of choice is the extended E350 with the 7.3 turbo diesel. The price seems to be double for one of those. Not knowing how this project was going to turn out I thought I would take the inexpensive route and build one myself with one of the less desirable e150 conversion vans and make it 4x4 at the same time. So I found this 97 E150 Conversion van on craigslist.

I like white doesn't show dents and you don't have to wash it as often. So I figured this would be the perfect candidate.

Interior

Has dual air, 4.6 gas motor and 256k miles. 1500 bucks cant go wrong.

Ok now for the conversion.

At first I bought a E350 rear axle and was going to use adapters to match a 2006 F250 front axle. After thinking about it for a while I decided to skip the adapters and put a sterling 10.25 axle out of a 2004 F350 I found on craigslist. Both axles had 3.73 gears and the rear was full float with a locker so I went with it.

Another score on craigslist 16" f350 rims with BFG mud terrains

Thanks boywonder

Partially removed the pin striping etc.. big job and not quite done yet. Haven't even washed it.

Rear axle is installed. I haven't hooked up the brakes yet or the shocks. Had the drive shaft shortened and re-balanced, used the E350 springs and mounts and bolted everything up. No extra holes needed.

Now I'm ready for the front. Dana 60 is in place waiting on 4x4 conversion parts from Colorado Camper Van. Derek, the owner has been real helpful with information and the process so far. Cant wait to see how the front install goes.
