VW Westy Propane tank for '00 E-250 build

Hello. I'm wondering if anyone has taken a propane tank from a Westy van and put it under his/her Ford E -Series? This is the tank I'm thinking about...http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_detai...ory_parent_id=

What do people think of this idea? I want to have a propane supply for a heater (right now I'm thinking an Olympic Wave, but want the ability to possibly upgrade to something like a Propex) as well as a connection for a Coleman style stove to use when outside conditions aren't good. Thanks for the insight!

It has been done. Not by me yet though. I've gotten as far as buying a used tank. The only complaint I've found so far is that its a little on the small side. Although that one is a little larger than a stock one.
Search around a bit. There are a few install threads somewhere.

I know that boywonder got one of the larger (4.6 gal?) tanks from gowesty for his e-series. I'm not sure if he has installed it yet.

I put one underneath my Chevy Express:

I got the 4.6 gallon version from GoWesty......8" diameter x 24" long IIRC. They also sell a 6 gallon tank, also 8" diameter x 30" long IIRC......

It's not installed yet.

Here are a few more options as well.....

http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/lp-g ... -tanks.htm

All of the tanks listed so far are manufactured by Manchester, including the GoWesty ones.

The ones in this link are 10" diameter, a tight squeeze between the chassis rails and the body for an Econoline. The 8" diameter tanks from GoWesty are also a bit of a tight fit if you have rear heat/air.

Re: VW Westy Propane tank for '00 E-250 build

thanks for the links. i think i've come across some of these in my "research." seems like a good route. maybe i can find one used and in good shape. is manchester the sole maker of these guys? i'll search around, and if anyone has input on tips/cautions on installing the tank and system, i'm curious what you have to say, (there's probably a few threads on this already, i'll keep poking around)... cheers

....good luck with that!! In my experience, you can probably find a used RV style tank that will require cutting a hole in the van's rocker panel for access (I think Sportsmobile sells the access door to cover the hole); it seems that used "van" style tanks are rarer than hen's teeth.

One other thing to consider is that the newer tanks have additional (mandatory) safety features like overfill protection, etc. If the used tank that you find is too old, you may struggle to find places to fill it.

One more consideration is doing the plumbing...rubber line or copper, etc.

I'm not versed in the details of tank safety.....but other members here may be.

Aren't RV propane tanks under the same certification rules as portable propane tanks? I'd look for the date codes on any used tank.
