what is PTO?

Can someone explain what "PTO" stands for. I'm new to 4x4 van world. Have always loved Ford vans, and after 20 years I'm planning to by a 4x4 for weekend camping. I just started researching recently. These rigs cost much more than I expected. Lol. At this point I think I'm looking for a cargo van, to slowly build the internal components. Hoping to find late 80's early 90's that is mechanically sound. I never realized how rare they are. This forum has been great source of information! Thank you.

Re: what is PTO?

The only PTO I'm aware of is Power Take Off for a winch. Typically a winch driven off the transfer case, instead of being driven electrically or hydraulically. Speed controlled by the engine speed.

Wasn't aware that vans ever came with a PTO winch.

Re: what is PTO?

That makes sense in context. Was mentioned on a late 70s Ford. I'll post if I can find it again. Thank you.

Re: what is PTO?

PTO is Power Take Off. Can be used for almost anything, not just a winch. Commonly used to drive a generator to supply 120VAC to a worksite.

Re: what is PTO?

PTO simply stands for "Power Take-Off". The most common form is a transmission power take-off, where an accessory drive unit is mounted to the side of the transmission and driven by one of the gearsets in the transmission. In the 5R110, the PTO meshes with the torque converter output, so you don't get true 1-1 input speeds. A PTO can also include a FEAD unit (front-end-accessory-drive) commonly called a "clutch-pump" which works just like an extra A/C compressor.

Theses PTOs are most often hydraulic pumps, which are used for tow bodies, winches, wheel-lifts, transfer pumps and many other uses. More recently the aftermarket has introduced high-output Household and commercial voltage PTO generators in single and 3-phase power. I believe you can do up to 10KW power output with the Fords. Could be useful if you want emergency stationary power and don't want a dedicated generator laying around.

Note: older vans with the 4-speed automatics did not come with PTO mounting provisions. Ford has instructions for cutting the case and adding a mounting flange, but it seems hardly worth the effort when you can buy PTO transmission at most wrecking yards. All the vans seem to come with the PTO interface wiring.

Seriously, CarringB, is there anything you don't know about Ford vans?

Thanks again for all your valuable contributions to the forum.
