Dana 60 Gearing on '96 Ford 7.3L PSD.

Hi All,
I"m starting my 4wd conversion and will be getting a Dana 60 for it this weekend. Need to confirm the best gearing for it. The one I'm looking at is a 3.73. I'm planning on running between 285-295 size tires.

Description of the Dana 60:
- Ford ball joint Dana 60 off a 02 super duty.
- high steer knuckle.
- axle has 3.73 gears
- vented and slotted rotors
- heavyduty ballistic heim joints.
- Fox Steering stabilizer

Don't want to spend any more money than what he is asking ie. to swap out gears so if the 3.73 is a good match then looks like I will pick it up this weekend.

Suggestions comments welcome!

Thanks!

Questions to be answered:
Towing? What size/ weight?
Mountains/ flat?
Altitude?
Configuration of rig as to boxes, load?
MPGmore important than acceleration?

Personally I like 3.55 to 3.73 for all round, but I am not towing and I like low revs on the freeway.

No Towing.
Not sure of weight - it's standard sportsmobile so around 9-10K lbs?
I'm at sea level but go to Tahoe, Downieville, Yosemite, Death Valley a lot
Prefer MPG over acceleration. It has a TS performance chip on it it that I never use.

Looks like 3.73 will work?

I would go w the 3.73's and the 285's. YMMV.

If you do not like it, the change is not that bad. What do you have in the rear now?

Ok will go with that and see how it works out.
Not sure what is in the rear. Just got the van. It's got a camburg lift and running 285's now. Unclear whether one of the PO's changed out the gearing when they did the lift and bigger tires.

Okay, but you going to need to know what gearing is on the rear, right? If it is not 3.73 then one of them has to change. If you have a 4.10 LSD rear end, then I would change out the front to match the 4.10 gearing. If the rear is 3.55, then I would change the rear to 3.73.

That information re: the rear spec is needed to move ahead.

yes, I haven't decide yet whether I will swap out the rear and get a beefier rear end or keep the existing rear and match up the gearing or not.

Any thoughts on the adequacy of the existing rear end for a 4x4 conversion?

Just starting the swap process now and you will be seeing many posts from me i'm sure!

Artictraveller: I would be interested in the Dana 60 3.73 ring and pinion.
