My ever observant wife happened to notice that the plastic axle hub seals on our 2008 Quigley 4x4 van were just swinging in the breeze. Has anyone else had this and how serious is it. I did some searching on the internet and found lots of people with same issue. Some had installed new seals, while others just let it ride. I think it's just an outer seal and not the one that keeps the water out and the grease in.

Mine are like that too. I did some research when I noticed and it is a common issue. Most guys over at ford-truck.com have left theirs like that for years without issue. It's just to keep large debris out of the axle tubes, the actual seal is closer to the diff itself,
it is a common fail on these axles. It does not happen much if the seal is loosen but getting water and dust in the axle tube.
As i did not like this idea to have a useless seal i changed it to the newer version seal. This fit much more better and will do his job for the next 10 years....i hope
Thanks for the responses. Looks like a bit of a project getting axles out and replacing the seals. I will talk to my mechanic next time I get it serviced.

I replaced mine with the new seal design about 3 years ago, so far so good. I was at a commercial vehicle ford dealership and they change them all the time. Since I am likely to get mud up there etc.. I figured better safe than sorry.
