What is the set up for changing a Sportsmobile tire!

Dumb question - how do you change a tire on a SMB (Ford E-350) with the higher suspension. Is there a jack that will jack the tires off the ground considering the height of the suspension?

A piece of 2x4 or 4x4 under the jack will let the factory jack lift high enough.

Re: What is the set up for changing a Sportsmobile tire!

SMB did offer a 5 or 6-ton telescoping hydraulic "bottle" type jack. A standard hydraulic bottle jack didn't have a long enough stroke. Here is a link to what I'm referring to; http://www.drillspot.com/products/63289 ... ottle_Jack

At one time Dave at Aluminess was going to make a saddle/cradle for this type jack to prevent it from slipping off the axle, you might want to check with him too.

Hey Bronco_Hauler!
Wow that is a wicked piece of kit! Would have to by four, or at least two I guess to make it worth it... ?

Re: What is the set up for changing a Sportsmobile tire!

Yeah, it's pretty cool. I have to thanks Bryanlaws for pointing it out to me. I really like that it has a good size saddle to support the load, as opposed to the small, flat, round disk that a bottle-jack typically has.

I only have one, and carry it in the SMB for tire changes, though I haven't had to use it yet. Should be capable enough to lift and support one tire off the ground. If you had to do front or rear axle work, then having two sure would be nice.

Yes it would make quick work of lifting the van up and locking the stands in one operation!

I see these as not only higher jack but a quick lift system for servicing... I have à 2.5T lift but that is not heavy duty enough for the van... So I spend ages lifting wheel after wheel and chocking with axle stand as I go...

Re: What is the set up for changing a Sportsmobile tire!

I carry one of these as backup to the shorter bottle jack.

It did a quick and good job lifting the front end when we re-did the springs and added the air bags.
We'll be making a base and top brace for it but currently it works with the 2x4.
Make sure you carry it in a sealed bag cuz the bottle jacks tend to leak a bit..

Re: What is the set up for changing a Sportsmobile tire!

Just took Bronco Hauler's advice and ordered two of the 3 Ton bottle jacks. I will be practicing with them this weekend to see how they work for changing a tire. Alltradetools shipped them in about 5 days for free. Grand total for two was about $65.

Their only drawback so far seems to be that they weigh 3 tons!
