Speedo Errors in 4 Low
My 2004, 6.0 4x4 SMB's Speedo does not register properly in 4 Lo. The speed is approximatley off by the gear ratio of the Atlas Transfer Case. Anyone figured out to how make the speed and I assume odometer work in 4 Low?

Re: Speedo Errors in 4 Low
It's not going to happen. The van doesn't have the software capability of knowing lo range and correcting the speedo for it.
One of the disadvantages of a non-factory conversion. I guess a non-factory conversion could be made to work if the factory had a true 4wd model that the software/hardware could be borrowed from, but they don't and you can't.
Ok, maybe you could. But I don't think any of us could afford the costs.

Re: Speedo Errors in 4 Low
IIRC, the speedo is driven off a speedo gear attached to the transfer case. So you can either have it be accurate in Hi or Low, but not both. And yes, it will throw off your odometer, so you can't trust the "bear left after 4.6 miles" directions you get from your friends.

Re: Speedo Errors in 4 Low
There is the same issue with the Quadvan conversion. I don't use the 4WD-LO very often so it hasn't been an issue for me. I use the GPS for distances.

Re: Speedo Errors in 4 Low
Anyone know offhand what the usual Atlas II transfer case ratio is in a Sportsmobile? The Sportsmobile website says either a 3.0:1 or 3.8:1 gear ratio.

Re: Speedo Errors in 4 Low
I've had about 50 4WD vehicles, and I don't think I've ever had one that told the correct speed in 4 Low

Re: Speedo Errors in 4 Low
QuadVan told me I can connect 4wd-low input under the hood (with the PTO/CTO wires) to the transfer case (will be electronic) and my speedo will be accurate in low range. Maybe diesels don't have that input?

Re: Speedo Errors in 4 Low
Maybe I'll just have to go out and drive around in 4-low with my GPS to find my ratio for myself

Re: Speedo Errors in 4 Low
Geoff ,
That sounds like a great excuse for an Adventure ! Herb and Bill were both correct in that you will get a reading in Hi or Lo but not both , and the readings are never truly accurate .
