2002 Sportsmobile 4x4

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/cto/4516407270.html

2002 sportsmobile 4x4 v-10 E350

105k miles, good condition, many upgrades, wheel and tires are new, brakes just done and upgraded, trans has mild shift kit with upgraded bigger trans pan. Aluminess front and rear bumpers with lights, spare tire carrier and storage box. Electric pop up bunk house top, kenwood navi stereo xm, video screen and headphones, sub. Has dc fridge and exterior shower, has one battery for engine and two for running what ever you like.

Looks like a pretty nice rig, although the top looks like the paint faded or something. I'm partial to the color as it looks the same as my van I picked up recently. I like the layout too!

Almost fell out of my chair when I saw the price. Then I saw it was a very simple build inside. Seems nice though.

Yeah its a pretty simple build inside. Not a good rig for someone who takes extended trips, but good for the casual weekend camper family who uses their van as a daily driver. It would actually be a great set up for me, but its out of my price range...although I think its priced pretty well.

Re: 2002 Sportsmobile 4x4

I am actually thinking about putting in an offer on this Sportsmobile. It would be my first SMB (first 4x4 actually!). Just registered on this site to ask some questions.

Wanted to get a weekend minimalist camper. Living in Colorado, need 4x4 to access a lot of the national forests. Need some room for 2 greyhounds, myself, and my girlfriend. This SMB seems to fit the bill perfectly. We don't necessarily shore power, stove, water systems, etc.

Any advice? Seems like a reasonable price. Anything to look for when purchasing?

I would insist on recent pictures, inside and out. Many of those pictures are in one of the SMB locations, ie. probably from 2002, so there is a reason everything looks absolutely pristine. I'd count on putting a new house battery in, just based on age.

Also, don't knock power, fridge and shower until you've come back with muddy dogs, muddy feet, rinsed everybody and then fed your girlfriend ice cream!

Definitely ask for some recent pictures inside and out. Theres a few members located in the SF area and perhaps one of them might be able to check it out for you. I noticed that the left side of the rear dinette is different than the right side. One side looks longer. I would ask about that and see what their rationale was for that.

Re: 2002 Sportsmobile 4x4

Thanks for all the replies. I did email the seller before I posted here. He did say that only the first two pictures are recent. The rest are from Sportmobile West when he bought it 4 years ago. He is the 2nd owner.

He is a mechanic, so hoping it is well taken care of.

My dad lives in Petaluma CA, so I might see if he can drive down and take a look.

What do you guys think of the asking price of $30K?

Oh yeah, power, plumbing, etc would be nice..... just can't afford the extra price it adds.

Re: 2002 Sportsmobile 4x4

I don't think you could build that van for $30k if you were to start fresh. 4x4 seems to be around $14k, power top is around $7k, the aluminess bits are prob $6k...that's $27k not including the price of the van and the interior build out or wheels and tires. Of course the main thing is if the configuration is the way you want it and if you're not sacrificing anything by getting this van.

If you don't plan on camping anywhere with plug in power, you won't be missing much. On board water is nice for brushing your teeth and washing your hands (that's all I really use it for). This van is definitely geared more towards a daily driver type that's set up for camping rather than a camper van that's set up for daily driving.

Well worth the price IMO.

Re: 2002 Sportsmobile 4x4

Looks like the driver's side dinette is shorter to accommodate the Ford factory rear air vent (see photo). Might have a flip-up section on the dinette for when it turns into a bed.
