considering changing my own fuel fuel filter on 2003 7.3

i have always had this done by a Ford dealership, and am considering doing it myself. not because of the money, just because the last time they trashed my van. there was grease and oil allover the place. i know it is a pain in the ass, but they should have it pretty well figured out, and have the right tools.

So, is it possible for a regular guy with no specialized tools to do this in a couple of hours?

I was hoping someone would jump in here with detailed instructions with pictures and a parts list, but while we're waiting for that...

I goggled "7.3 powerstroke van fuel filter change" and got 2 Utube videos and and a whole bunch of other (mis)information.

That should be enough to tell you if you want to attempt it. If you do, let us know how it works out.

Chris is about a billion times more the mechanic than I'll ever be
and maybe he will share how he does the filter change. The way
I do it is as follows. I remove the air filter box, then I take off
the dog house and remove the duct work from the turbo all the
way to where it hooks to the airbox. Doing this gives you good
access to the fuel filter. I'm sure there is probably a better way
to do it but that is what works for me. Good luck.

great info so far. i never thought of just doing a search on you tube. thanks for that tip.
you tube user froglobster had 4 videos that give you a pretty good idea on what is involved.
i think i'm going to go for it.

I did it this morning.
Most of the time is spent removing stuff, and pushing stuff out of the way.
No special tools needed.
Never going back to the dealer to have this done.

not sure what you used for tightening the cap on.

but I used my oil wrench (that is bigger than the cap) but fill the gap with an old electical tape roll to fill the gap.

saved me from having go buy another too like those fancy wrap wrenches I have seen.

wait till you want to re-seal your fuel bowl. its even more of a pain, but doable for sure.

and you get better the more you do it. faster at least.

Some pretty good write ups on this page for the 7.3L. I have changed out my own fuel filter, very simple. Just make sure after you top up the diesel into the fuel bowl that you cycle your glow plugs/ignition so that no air bubbles get into your fuel line.
