PowerMaxTom (was DieselTechTom)

I've been getting the 299 trouble code for a while now, but it's gotten worse this summer, so I figured I'll do something about it.

DieselTechRon on YouTube, removed the turbo from a pick up truck in 10 minutes, it took me about two hours+… But here it is.

There is hardly any soot at all. Which makes me think my witches'-brew of Stanadyne and Ford cetane enhancer is doing something. There is, however, noticeable rust under the variable vanes. I will clean them thoroughly, just as Ron does in the video, reassemble it with upgraded oil lines, upgraded drain tube, CAC boots, actuator and maybe an improvement or two.

I'm thinking of starting my own YouTube channel called DieselTechTom. It will mostly consist of me screaming "what the f--k, what the f--k, why the f--k would they do it this way"?!

Re: DieselTechTom

Tom,

A P0299 could also be the actuator. Especially since your turbo looks remarkably clean inside. I have no idea how to test or check the actuator.

But, I think you can remove it and rotate the unison ring by hand to verify it is free.

Re: DieselTechTom

The 299 would only show up after sitting hot for a while--ie. a heat soak. My VGT duty cycle seemed to confirm that the actuator is OK, but I did order a new one just to be sure. Too much work to remove the turbo over and over.

Re: DieselTechTom

DieselTechTom is a flop. The turbo was too rusted to use. I should have known that the worst case scenario is the only scenario when it comes to these awful engines.

Anyhoo, I ordered a new turbo and will install it with new hoses, oil lines, backpressure sensor etc..

Wanted to have the old turbo ceramic coated to prevent this issue from recurring. A neat idea, not sure I'm comfortable taking apart a new turbo to have it done now.

Re: DieselTechTom

I got the P0299 code today... I just call it the replace turbo light when my CEL lights up. 66K miles this is my 5th time. I don't have the time to do it myself and have been getting estimates of doing some bullet proofing in preparation for this day. This particular turbo was a re-manufactured replacement back when that has now been cleaned 2 times. I think I'm done with it!

Re: DieselTechTom

Last time I bought a new Garret turbo (OEM Manufacturer) from these guys:

http://www.turbochargerpros.com/addtoca ... 30044.html

The OEM replacement turbo was quite a bit cheaper than a Ford rebuilt, and it includes a new actuator. Also replaced the oil feed and drain tubes.

Re: DieselTechTom

Starting to live P0299 hell as well, running okay but getting codes every 500 miles or so. Took to the dealer since under warranty, or at least I think. 2010, 57k miles, got charged $300 today for them not finding anything, service rep claimed turbo not covered by 100k engine warranty, denied the 6.0 even had turbo issue, wtf?

Pretty good business - sell somebody something that tells them you have to bring it in for service to get fixed otherwise this fing little light is going to keep going off, then not do anything and extort random amounts of cash based on how long they feel like trying from the dumbass who was stupid enough to buy a 2nd 6.0

Anyway not done yet with these asses, but enough crying for now....
