Rear end noise !
So I started hearing /feeling a bad noise from my rear end (3:73 limited slip ), figured I'd change the fluid and have a look but all seemed to be normal. Added new fluid and the additive but no joy. This really only happens when it's thoroughly warmed up and say getting off a highway ,stop at a light then when I turn it grinds as if I'm locked up. This thing is bone stock with only 25 k on the clock! Anyone else have this problem ? Or know what it is. I took it to a "rear mechanic" he drove it and said he didn't feel anything so he didn't open the diff. (He was also rushing to get his race car ready for the weekend so I was back-burnered I think.) please help- thanks !

Re: Rear end noise !
Add a few more ounces of friction modifier. It breaks down after a while.

Re: Rear end noise !
If you believe you have enough additive in it, go to an empty parking lot and drive in tight circles, 2 loops in each direction to get the lube and additive into the plates.

Re: Rear end noise !
Every time somebody has changed my diff fluid I've had to put in a little more additive. What is the correct amount to put in? Seems I ordered a couple of bottles and it said to pour in one. I'd like to know what the correct amount is for on the road.

Re: Rear end noise !
Thanks, I'll add more modifier and see if that does it. Only added 1 bottle so far and I have a 2nd, ill let you know if it works.

Re: Rear end noise !
Quigley told me that what you describe might well be the limited slip plates going bad. In fact, he said that driving on the freeway, exiting, and turning was an especially good way to determine if they are gone. I had to replaced the limited slip plates in our van fairly early...I'd have to look up the mileage but I know that the van was still under warranty when it was done.

I thought the same but in the end it was just slightly too little additive. Adding another 1/2 bottle cured it. I was told the rear end should be looked at around 120K. I'm sure other issues can cause an early failure though.

Re: Rear end noise !
Added the 2nd bottle and drove it about 300 miles. Seemed to help cut down on the chatter but it didn't stop it completely. I was told by a mechanic friend that the GM additive works the best so I'm thinking - start over drain the fluid and try the GM stuff. I'll keep you posted
BTW would an Eaton E- locker nip this problem ???
