Steering components

Rust? Look underneath and in rain gutters around roof.

Beat up interior?

Engine should still be strong if maintained but you are due for a tranny about this mileage if it hasn't had one.

Good luck.

How will one know it is time to replace the transmission besides the high miles and yr of the vehicle?

What signs do I look for when driving to tell?

Rough shifting, burnt smelling or black fluid. But the biggest way IMO is that if it hasn't been done by 175k then it's gonna need it. E40D trannies (what's in it) just last about 150k, especially in a diesel. Once again, just my opinion and experience.

As far as the tranny, it should be serviced every 30,000 (fluid and filter change) for longest life expectancy. That and if the vehicle was never used for heavy towing or driven really hard, the tranny should last a long time. Heat is the biggest killer. A trans temp gauge is always a good investment. Good luck
