Brake fade and power steering pump replacement...

So, I have two issues.

The first one is something I have been working around, but is a pain in the butt... My 1997 E350 with V10 needs to be pumped once to get a more solid pedal. I can get it stopped and it doesn't go all the way to the floor, but what can be the issue? Had new lines run and were professionally bled. Has been doing it a while...

Second issue just started. There is a ton of power steering fluid coming from the pump. It isn't the gearbox and appears to be the pump. How tough is this replacement and repair? I did searches for everything and outside reading a ton of pages, I figured I would ask.

Thanks in advance!

It sounds like something is pushing the pads back into the calipers. Then you first push on the pedal gets the pads closer to the brake disk, 2nd push is solid.

some possibilities:

- warped rotor
- wheel bearings let rotor wobble
- rotor not sitting flat on hub
- thick spot on rotor

That's all that comes to mind at the moment.

Re: Brake fade and power steering pump replacement...

Sounds like a leaky Master Cylinder to me. Did it only do this after the last brake-bleed? Bottoming-out the pedal too hard while bleeding can cause this. But sometimes they just go out on their own.

Power Steering pump shouldn't be too hard. But usually its the return line fitting leaking. Also you can buy an o-ring kit to rebuild the pump. Make sure a new high-pressure hose is available locally to you (at least on the store shelf). The pressure line on all cars often seizes on, and you have to cut the hose to get the pump out.

That could also be air in the line.........perhaps another brake bleed session....
