Uh-Oh, I think Hal is intercoursed

So I go to start Hal a couple days ago and the starter wouldn't turn the engine over. The starter sounded OK but it sounded like the engine would start to turn over but then just stop. So must be the starter I thought.
Just put now put on a new starter and when I went to turn the engine over there was a loud BANG and violent shudder. I instantly turned off the engine and looked under the van to see oil pouring out.

Got the drain pan under there but not soon enough. One advantage of having cats. Big bags of cat litter.
So does this mean what I think it means (new engine needed)?

Sounds like you had a "Hydrolocked" cylinder. Cylinder either filled with coolant (leaking head gasket) or fuel (leaking injector). Because you can't compress a fluid; when you cranked it over, something had to go bang. Perhaps a rod...

No bueno

Sounds like possibly a cylinder was hydrolocked. Might have cracked the block or lifted the head pushing past the hydrolock.

What motor do you have?

Coolant. Appears to be a common problem: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=1858066

OK, assuming the worst, any remanufactured engine swap out advice? I'll definitely be farming this job out.

Bummer man. I hate to hear it. I have no idea what a v6 might cost but my 5.4 was pretty pricey, over $4k to have someone do the job. Perhaps you can find a salvage yard engine?

I'm doing the "Repair or Replace" internal dance now. I'm leaning towards buying another van at the moment.

Re: Uh-Oh, I think Hal is intercoursed

Seeing how much you love to modify your van it'd be tempting to get the 12v Cummins that UJOR has for sale... That'd be a sweet engine!

I really like what you've done with your van so far so I wish you a prompt recovery.

Cheers
Mr. D
