Slow to engage Drive after Reversing downhill 2002 7.3 Quig

After Reversing at a downhill angle, stopping, and shifting the lever to Drive, the tranny doesn't seem to put Drive in gear and depending on the angle of the slope, the van will roll back or barely creeps forward even with throttle. Put in 1st gear, and the tranny puts that in gear and drives forward no issues, then I can shift to 2nd, then Drive and the tranny shifts fine after that.

No weird tranny noises or clunking.

I can only replicate this issues when Reversing downhill. On a flat surface van Reverses and engages Drive like normal.

Would greatly appreciate your input.

TIA!

Re: Slow to engage Drive after Reversing downhill 2002 7.3 Q

Crazy! I have the same issue with mine. 2001, 7.3 152k miles. I brought it in to get a new tranny and they ordered the wrong one. Had to put the stock back in for my six week vacation starting on friday. Sure hope it lasts till I get back. cheers….

You both have 4R100 transmissions.

Yep. Mark is brilliant. He responded to your distress signal. Check it out:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/13...r-reverse.html

BTW, I put the F-350 4x4 deep transmission pan (which has a drain plug) on my tranny and I have made notes everywhere to only buy the F-350 corresponding deep transmission filter for it regardless of what the parts guy says. Because the VIN # for my van will always be calling for the shallow 4x2 filter for the shallow 4x2 transmission pan which I replaced!

Re: Slow to engage Drive after Reversing downhill 2002 7.3 Q

Because you have had this van and transmission for some time, and have not changed the transmission pan or made any other modifications, and because the problem just surfaced recently, I highly doubt it has anything to do with the filter - unless you have had some transmission service not mentioned.

Check the fluid level as suggested. It can be very difficult to get an accurate reading on the long dipstick that these vans have as residual in the tube can make it look like the level is much higher than it is. You could also add a half of a quart and see if it makes a difference - don't worry about over filling by a half a quart.

Ocsmb: This is the guy who has advised you about your transmission:

Make sure that you update with your results after you have checked what he and Bajasportsmobile have suggested.

Slow to engage Drive after Reversing downhill 2002 7.3 Quig

Had a flush and fill (I believe done simultaneously) at a Ford dealer last August about 5000 miles ago. Also, quigley confirmed the tranny pan is original to the e350. Haven't had time to investigate further but will make sure I update both posts when I do. Thanks.
