Diesel warm up time / temp?
This might be as subjective as how long do you toast your toast, but I'll ask anyway.
I love driving my van, but I often hesitate to drive it unless heading out on a trip because I dislike sitting in the driveway high-idling until I feel like the engine is warm enough. For the record, I don't drive off until oil temp is 130F according to the Scangauge. This number is PDOOMA but things feel sluggish if I drive before that. That warmup routine takes approximately 10 minutes in the summer and 15 in the winter. Even after warming up, I try not to do any throttle mashing until the temp is closer to 180F. If I have the forethought, I'll plug in the block heater, but that takes 2+ hours to really make much of a difference in warmup time (it sure does crank easier in the winter though).
Diesel guys- How warm do you warm your engine before you drive off?

Re: Diesel warm up time / temp?
Depends on the ambient temp for me. In cold weather, which around here is about 50 deg, I might let it warm up 3 or 4 minutes. In summer, just a couple minutes at most.
From my house, the road down to the main road is 95% downhill, so I just let it idle while I roll down the hill until I get to the stop sign, which gets the temp up to about 130. Then I baby it until it hits about 180 or 190. I am very gentle on the throttle until it's been running about 10 minutes. Once it gets over 195, I start driving it like a normal person.

I also idle up to about 125-130deg before driving off. That usually takes 5-8 minutes so not a big deal. It does not drive "normally" until temps reach about 190deg.

Re: Diesel warm up time / temp?
I'm far more concerned about cool down time than warm up time. I will take it easy on the first few minutes of any drive to make sure the oil has warmed up and flownig freely (as I would do with any turbo engine), but other than that I don't sweat it.
I find there is so little load on a large diesel just idling, that it doesn't make a whole lot of difference whether you idle it to warm it up or not. That said, I live in a VERY mild climate, even by California standards. If I were in a very cold climate, I would warm the engine with the block heater or some idle time.

Re: Diesel warm up time / temp?
I usually don't start driving until oil is 100+ deg, keep it mellow until 190 and then peddle to the metal. I start slowing down when I'm approaching my destination and let it idle for 30+ seconds before shutting her down. God I love turbo diesels.

Re: Diesel warm up time / temp?
Two previous posts hit the nail on the head. Above 100, it runs fine. Cooldown is much more important according to the owners manual. My cooldown depends on how long/hard I drove it. Usually about a minute...
Only thing to add is if I start and it is already above 100, i simply wait until the oil temp stops dropping and actually rises a degree to give the oil a chance to circulate a bit before driving off.

Re: Diesel warm up time / temp?
I start mine and drive gently away. It takes about 10 miles or more to get water temp up and a few more miles before the oil is up to 180 and I can use more throttle.

Re: Diesel warm up time / temp?
man, I'm far more careless than you guys. Unless it's winter I just start it and go and don't baby it.
edit to add: maybe I should read the owner's manual

Re: Diesel warm up time / temp?
I treat mine like the old man I am. I don't let it idle for an extended period when I start it, but drive easy until the EOT gets warmed up. Usually about 3 miles of flat driving, and it there's some ******* riding my bumper because I'm not going fast enough....too bad.
We aren't supposed to idle our 6.0's for extended periods anyway, are we? I was stuck in the normal Seattle traffic on I-5 yesterday, and was "idling" for the 40 minutes that it took me to cover about 5 miles of freeway. That worried me...

If I idle (not in traffic), I use the high-idle switch. Supposedly that will keep the EGR system slightly cleaner...? (so says the internet)
