can you drive on a bad 6.0 PSD injector?
In need of some advise pronto. I'm 300 miles from home in Durango, CO and my 2005 6.0 is blowing white smoke, which turns black at WOT. Seems worse at idle. Throwing a P0299 code which is turbo underboost code but from searching the forums it seems like it could come from a multitude of things.
-starts fine
-van has plenty of power but idle is rough.
-no check engine light
-altenator, ficm, and batteries are good.
-EOT/ECT delta's are good and the degas bottle appears normal.
The smoke is actual smoke, not steam and seems to fit with an injector problem and not EGR cooler related The question is, can I limp it back to home so that my mechanic can look at it or will I potentially cause more damage? I could rent a car and flat bed it back. Conversely, does anyone knows a good diesel mechanic in Durango. Thanks for any help.

Even it it's just stuck open and over-fueling? Bummer.

I opted for a tow even though the dealership was 3 miles away. Better safe than sorry. I really jacked up my work truck trying to get in (not a 6.0) when the same thing happened.

There's a Ford dealership in Durango but I would rather flat bed it to Flagstaff. Have any idea what that might cost?
Wouldn't an injector throw a code or the check engine light? I'll have a look at that thread.

Re: can you drive on a bad 6.0 PSD injector?
My 6.4 didn't throw a dummy light and did just what you're posting. At first it was just a miss so I reved the hell out of it and bam, huge smoke. I pulled over and called the shop. Weird. My 6.0 did throw a code when the EGR cooler failed and Ford said I also lost an injector. Not sure what the issues were on the 6.4, it's not my vehicle and other than having to work out of a crappy spare, I really didn't care. Almost 2 months in the shop though.

Re: can you drive on a bad 6.0 PSD injector?
Not to dampen things but my EGR/Injector failure was about 2,200 bucks done under warranty. Now I'm not sayin Ford didn't just throw some extra at it because it was under warranty. Hope you get out of your predicament. I hate breakdowns. There is a reason why I have a couple tow policies.

Re: can you drive on a bad 6.0 PSD injector?
I've got good insurance but not sure they would cover the flat bed expense if it can be fixed here. Hopefully, the Ford dealership has a key drop off. Dang, finally stranded by the 6.0
Anyhow, thanks for the help and condolences
Joe
edit to add: I'm getting over it but we camped at the bottom of one of the best high country mountain bike rides in the Colorado. Molas Pass>Colorado Trail>Engineer Mountain Trail. Next time.

Re: can you drive on a bad 6.0 PSD injector?
Never had an issue with AAA bringing out a flat bed but have been towed with the rears on the ground a few times also. If it makes you feel better I've had to be towed for injector problems in every diesel I've used at work, 7.3, 6.4 and the new 6.7 has been trouble also I just haven't been issued one yet. I quit having problems with my 6.4's injectors after I started using fuel additive. They took the additive away at the first of the year and it seems like I get the bellowing smoke from time to time now. I just keep driving it
Please tell us what Ford has to do to get you back on the road. Good luck.
