E350 same rear axel width dually VS single wheel?

I found a cheap dually E350 ambulance without the rear box, I would like to know if it is worth grabbing it for my needs.
I am searching for a full floater rear axel for my van and curious to know if the dually is the same width then the single wheel van? or wider?
Thanks for your answers.
Andrew

Re: E350 same rear axel width dually VS single wheel?

When you say "without the rear box" do you mean it is a cab/chassis (aka cutaway)?

All of the cab-chassis with rear fuel tanks have a wider rear axle than the vans (by 4"), even if its has Singe-Rear wheels. The Dually rear E350 axle are 8" wider at 75.4" and the E450 axles are 77.7".

Cutaway E350s with mid-ship fuel tanks have the same rear axle width as the and, but also may or may not have a semi-float.

Also, Pre'-08 E450 axle do not have any parking brake provisions. They used a drive-line brake at the time.

E350 same rear axel width dually VS single wheel?

I'm working on a top-secret project for my rig. All I can tell you is I'll be selling my Dyna-Trac Pro Rock 60w/LSD in the next couple of months. 4.10 gears, LSD, full floater, disc brakes and will bolt directly into a Ford van. 72,000 miles excellent condition.

carringb, thank you for the feedback.
Yes it is a cutaway, rear Fuel tank would be nice to add on mine.
Might work with the 4 inch wider axel need to see if full floater.

Zeta, am interested, give me more info when due time. Thanks

If its a rear-tank cutaway, it should be a full-float axle.

It would seem that a 4" wider axle would eliminate the need for rear wheel spacers......is it that simple? The 4" wider rear axle would be a bolt up?

Yes. As long as you don't need the adapters to change the bolt pattern to match the front. All it needs is new U-bolts (which I recommend anyways), as the axle has thicker tubes.

Keep in mind there was a break in braking systems starting in 2008. Older axles use the differential speed sensor, and '08+ axles use outboard wheels speed sensors (and have separate R/L brake lines).

Also, SRW cutaways are not super common, especially with the rear tank option. Safeway uses lots of them, but otherwise it seems like most go into Ambulance use.

Do all of these axles use 8 x 6.5" lug pattern? I'm assuming the 2008+ change is to support RSC.....

Re: E350 same rear axel width dually VS single wheel?

Yes, even 2014 vans have 8x6.5" hubs. I'm sure RSC had something to do with it, even on non-RSC vans. But, it is 4-channel ABS on non-RSC vans too, so that should perform better in extreme weather.
