EOT & ECT - Too Hot?

OK - well we finally got our dream rig. 2005 PSD 6.0 Sportsmobile EB50. We picked it up in Fresno a couple months ago and drove it all of the way back to Georgia. We thought taking four days would give us a number of eight hour driving days and would not be too hard on us. Nope.

After about 300 miles our oil cooler went bad. We had to stop every 25 miles to let it cool down. That was one long drive with about 100 short stops in between. We called several mechanics and no one could fix it in under 48 hours and we had to get home.

Fast forward three months. I have a rebuilt oil cooler with a bulletproof EGR. Van seems to run fine but it is hot. I have a scan gauge X and at 65 mph on a flat highway in 45 degree weather the EOT is at 222 and the ECT is at 209. The delta is O.K. but this seems hot to me. We also took a drive in the mountains and it got up to 233 which scared me and the delta spread got up to 16 but it was 30 degrees out. I am worried that on a 95 degree Georgia day I am gonna burn something up.

Does this seem normal? I have heard that the ECT on the vans run hotter than the trucks but are you guys seeing this?

Second is the MPG. I seem to get about 14 on the highway and about 11-12 on the back roads. Thought I would get more than that with a diesel but I guess it does weight 9500lbs. If you guys are getting the same I am OK with it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: EOT & ECT - Too Hot?

oh no, that's an awful story. Did you have to flat bed it back to Georgia?

Those temps are pretty normal. The spread should be less than 14 or 15 degrees at 65 mph over a long flat stretch. The oil will get much hotter on a long grade but then after cresting the hill the ECT will come down faster than the oil. Do a search, there's a couple of threads on EOT temp. The engine will shut down I think at 242F.

The vans run hotter than the trucks. Even though they are detuned for less HP the turbo intercooler is smaller and the engine bay cramped. At what temp does the fan come on? Some have gone "Full Badger" and installed hood and side panel heat louvers. http://www.hoodlouvers.com/

When you installed the BPD EGR cooler did you also replace the OEM oil cooler? If there isn't one already install a coolant filter. Besides your scanguage, install a pyrometer and monitor your exhaust temperatures or EGTs. That's a first rule of thumb with these trucks. Check your exhaust system and condition of the cat and muffler to make sure there isn't a restriction. Read this:

Re: EOT & ECT - Too Hot?

Those temps are at least 10-15deg hotter than what I have experienced over the past 8-10 years.

I often drive when outside temps push 100deg and very seldom see EOT or ECT of 230, although the cooling system is working pretty hard.

Good luck tracking down any issues.

Re: EOT & ECT - Too Hot?

I get 14-18 mpg hwy with a 6" lift and 35" tires. Roof rack and two bikes sticking up acting as a partial airfoil. Modified exhaust and PCM tune and FICM tune.

Re: EOT & ECT - Too Hot?

TBUNCH, those temps seem too high to me for that ambient temp. And your delta, while technically ok I guess, seems like its on the verge of indicating something bad, again considering your running flat at a reasonable speed and low ambient temp. I also have an '05 6.0 and only see temps that high when the ambient is over 85-90 and I'm pulling a grade. For comparison, in December I drove from Oregon to Pierre, SD with ambient in the high 30's much of the time and my ECT never really got over 200. I did a lot of long flat runs at around 80 during the eastern portion of that drive and my ECT never exceeded 200 and my delta never went over 10. I was running much lighter than you though as mine is just a Chateau van with extra cabinets, holding tanks etc so keep that in mind. I also use a Scangauge to monitor these temps.

Re: EOT & ECT - Too Hot?

Hmmm, my EOT gets over 200F regularly while at the same time EGTs are below 1000F. But 220F on a flat hwy with the outside temp in the 40s does seem rather high.

I wonder how accurate the OEM sensor is?

Re: EOT & ECT - Too Hot?

Good question, I've never checked my Scanguage against anything but I know its a pretty commonly used tool. I would agree though that mine gets over 200 regularly when driving at freeway speeds for any period of time, but usually not when ambient is below 55-60 and I'm on flat ground. Mine never gets anywhere near what he referenced though at 65 degrees ambient on flat ground. It usually hovers in the high 190s and occasionally creeps slightly over 200. EDIT: I just noticed you referenced EOT, the temps I'm referring to are ECT so add about 9 degrees for my EOT.

Re: EOT & ECT - Too Hot?

Run vehicle at 65mph with A/C off on a flat stretch of road

Deltas should be less than 15 apart

Coolant will be hovering at 200 +-

I changed my oil cooler out 50k ago and consistently have a 10-12 delta

Towing 21143lbs is around 20-25 apart

Re: EOT & ECT - Too Hot?

Well, the scanguage is simply using the PID that was already available as stock. I suspect it's fine and it's something else.

First order of business is probably a coolant pressure test while driving. The issue could simply be a bad water pump impeller, bad thermostat, or inoperative fan.

The water pumps are not known for failure but the do have a plastic impellor blade and the OP recently had extensive engine work. There could be debris in the coolant system. I would think if the EGR cooler was replaced any decent mechanic would also have known to replace to oil cooler.
