Best Fuel Pump for Ford 5.8L ?

What do you guys recommend as the best electric fuel pump for a 1995 5.8L gasoline engine?

Or maybe second best. Assuming that the dealership OEM Ford pump is best, it only comes as a complete assembly which I would prefer not to pay for at nearly $500.

Because the fuel tank must be dropped to replace the fuel pump, I am trying to avoid a fuel pump with reviews like this:

"i have replaced 5 of these airtex fuel pumps in a five year period there just a bad brand"

http://www.autozone.com/external-eng...0/#tab-reviews

Although there have been views of my similar post at ford-trucks.com, so far over there no one has suggested a pump.

Bosch is OEM. Delphi was also but had a higher failure rate. The Denso pump is an excellent alternative. I would pick that over the Delphi.

PS- x100 on avoiding Airtex

Re: Best Fuel Pump for Ford 5.8L ?

Thanks carringb! Funny, I was having coffee with a buddy this morning and we were talking about sourcing the fuel pump and it occurred to me that it was probably a Bosch, but I don't know how to source the pump only. That is unless I drop the tank, remove the existing pump and look for a Bosch number on the pump itself. Which I plan to do this evening.

BTW, Kemicalburns over at Ford-Trucks.com just suggested rockauto. They have the Motorcraft entire assembly for $305.79 (much better than my local dealership):

MOTORCRAFT Part # PFB4 {#F6TU9A407DB, F6TZ9A407DB} Fuel Pump And Hanger Assembly w/ Gasket (Only 4 Remaining) $305.79

And they also have the Denso pump only without assembly for $108.79! DENSO Part # 9533004 Module Assembly (Pump Assy. w/o Hanger); w/o Hanger $108.79

But the picture of the Denso looks completely different than the Motorcraft which has me concerned.

Re: Best Fuel Pump for Ford 5.8L ?

I did the pump and screen only on my van. The earlier vans aren't much different, except with one less wire entering the assembly if I remember correctly (replacement pumps just come with an adapter). If the sender is working correctly, you don't need the full assembly.

carringb: Yes, I have heard the earlier pumps (which likely includes mine) are two wire.
And I want to buy the pump and screen only.
But I want to buy the Bosch pump and I can't seem to find it by searching for year, make and model, engine type and trim at the various online parts stores.

Re: Best Fuel Pump for Ford 5.8L ?

carringb: Excellent! I am dropping the tank after work to make sure it is correct. Well beyond the call of duty! Thank you very much.

Re: Best Fuel Pump for Ford 5.8L ?

CarringB seems to have found an unbeatable deal, but keep RockAuto in mind for stuff like this in the future. They are my go to for most parts like this. Great selection, great prices. Quick shipping.

Good luck with everything. Dropping the tank sucks but I've done it a few times. I would recommend driving the van up on blocks, at least on one side, a few inches, and then there's enough room to work under there. Put a stout piece of plywood between your jack and the bottom of the tank to spread out the weight. Hopfully you don't have any rusty bolts to deal with. There are really just two, which you access on the outer, upper part of the frame on the driver's side.

86Scotty: Thank you for your words of encouragement. I too have dropped the van tank a number of times. Off to drop the tank now before sunset.

Re: Best Fuel Pump for Ford 5.8L ?

Well tank is dropped. But fuel pump and assembly is still in the tank because...

Why do they call them "quick" disconnects ?!?!

Am using a set of these from Napa which have worked for me before (the usual 3/8" and 5/16"), but not now:
