2003, 7.3 L, Best Diesel Fuel Additive

Hello all. I have a 2003 EB 50 7.3L 4x4 SMB with 75,000 miles. I just learned today that I should be adding an additive to my fuel at every fillup. What are the thoughts on this? What additives are guys using and what do you all think is the best? Thanks in advance for your help. Cheers! Fernando

I use Deuce Juice. The bottle is very easy to dispense. Seems to be working.

I previously used Stanadyne Performance Formula. Standyne has a number of different formulas, and as far as I know, is the only additive manufactured by a fuel injector manufacturer.

I now use Opti-Lube XPD, which in one test, provided a larger improvement in wear resistance (lubricity). Opti-Lube also has a number of different formulations.

You will find passionate (rabid) supporters and detractors of just about every diesel additive out there. FWIW, I think 7.3L's were OK without diesel additives, at least until we went to Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD) in this country.

2003, 7.3 L, Best Diesel Fuel Additive

There are a few other discussions on additives on the forum, some are hijacked threads that started out discussing something else altogether....it happens....anyway, a little harder to find doing a search. I've been running some level of bio-diesel regularly in my 7.3L rig since I got it, ranging from 5-20%, with the occasional 100% bio in the summer. They say that bio has higher levels of lubricating properties than plain diesel. I've never run an additive, but may give it a try

I just tried out BG 244 diesel fuel system cleaner in my 7.3, I've used 44 before in my gassers and this came recommended too. Seems to have a little better response and less soot it seems.

this is what ive been told by several local diesel folks i trust, but i was really surprised at how quiet member bmwbilo's van was the other day when we crossed paths. was curious if he used any kind of additive. wouldnt bother me to quiet down my noisemaker a little.

FWIW - mine is at 133k and has never had any fuel additive or problem with the engine or fuel system.

Talking about finding things buried in unrelated posts..

The local search function here is not very useful.
When you need to really dig down into the forum - use Google.

your search terms site:sportsmobileforum.com

I use it along with members screen names to find posts from people who's opinion on a given subject I trust.

I bought some stuff that those knobs from American Chopper were pushing
when they built that diesel bike a couple years back. I think it was called
Monster diesel. I used it all up and not sure if it made much difference as
my hearing isn't that great. I think when you saw me I may not have even
had any additive in my van. I have used Power service most. I just started
using it again this past winter.

Re: 2003, 7.3 L, Best Diesel Fuel Additive

I ran into this a while back when I was searching for ways to make my 7.3 quieter in the cab... came across a handful of threads over on thedieselstop relating to adding 2 stoke oil in the fuel tank. One thread in particular had actual DB ratings comparing a handful of different fuel additives and 2 stroke oil actually made the most difference... So I tried it on a the return leg of a 3 hr road trip (drove out with a freshly filled tank and no additives, and then returned with a freshly filled tank with 1qt of 2 stroke oil added in) and the difference was actually quite noticeable. Engine sounded smoother and was definitely quieter. Same road. Same day, same flat boring drive. I measured the DB on my iphone on each direction just to confirm if my ears were tricking me (I know it's not a great dbmeter but it's what I had handy) and it showed an average of 4db less on the return leg of the trip.

I'm not convinced enough that I will run it in every tank, but it did make a difference.

2 Stroke oil made my 6.0 quieter too. But, at 1 quart/fillup I needed too much for long trips (Alaska or Labrador) so I switched to Opti-Lube Summer Formula (3oz/fillup).

BTW, make sure the 2 stroke oil is TC-W3 certified. That designation is ashless and will not cause problems with injectors, turbos, etc.
