When to overhaul tranny

I have a 2002 e250 2wd , with 144000 kms about 88000 miles.
When would be appropriate to "overhaul " the transmission.
What should / could be done just to make sure it lasts and does not crap out on me and mine while traveling.

What telltale signs to look for while driving?
And what should be done to refurbish it.
Just want a reliable ride...

Reelchef: If you tell us what motor you have that's a good hint to what trans you probably have......

If you snap and post a picture of the mfr. data plate on the driver's door jamb it will tell us trans, axle ratio, etc.

Re: When to overhaul tranny

IMO there is not real reason to "preventatively" overhaul most modern transmissions. Its rare they have major problems without warning signs first.

Proper maintenance, and additional cooling if you are running over the stock ratings, are really all that's needed.

I'm coming up on 405,000 miles on my 4R100 transmission.

Re: When to overhaul tranny

The CEL (Check Engine Light) for your transmission is the Over Drive "Off" light.
One big thing to look out for is if your O.D. "Off" light is flashing.
It means: "Have your transmission checked."

I know I must not be the only person who wants to know what fluids, what maintenance schedule and any other things that carringb has done or not done to get 405K miles out of a 4R100 transmission.

Re: When to overhaul tranny

I have two E250's with the 4R70W transmission; one just over 275K miles and one with 205K miles both original to the chassis.

With simple full flush or exchange of the fluid adequate cooling for loads hauled or towed I agree with CarringB---no real need rebuilding a transmission before or unless it needs it.

Well equipped shops with "better" diagnostic scanners can interrogate the PCM for pending transmission trouble codes---this would be a service well worth its cost. These days however most shops including dealerships want to replace a failing transmission with a new/rebuilt unit----very, very few do smaller repairs that might not require a full exchange because their mechanic's knowledge or training isn't sufficient to perform those types of diagnosis and repair.

Re: When to overhaul tranny

I'll tag onto this thread with a related transmission question: what's the general consensus for doing a transmission fluid flush/refill?

My van: 1998 E250 SMB 2WD 5.4 with (I think) 4R100 trans. 89,000 miles (pretty much mostly highway). I don't know for sure if the fluid has ever been changed (no documentation to that face from the original owner).

I hear some say NOT to change out the fluid, while others say to do so. I'm not having any trans issues at all, just thinking about preventative maintenance.

With 5.4L it would most assuredly be a 4r70w.

I don't believe in fluid flushes - waste of money. Simply drop the pan, replace the filter, there is where all the bad stuff is trapped, and replace the fluid.

If your fluid is so "burnt" that you are worried about not having gotten it all out, you probably have a bigger problem. You could do a second filter and fluid change for less than the high profit margin "Transmission Flush".
