Rear diff leak

After never had leaked a drop, I get out today after putting 600 mi or so on in the last week to see this...

Guessing I've blown some sort of seal back there. Any guesses to what and how complicated (and how much $$) of a job this usually is? A few months ago I added a bottle of the Ford LS additive to stop the chattering but that's it... 85k on the rig now

Re: Rear diff leak

Is that oil on the underside of the van body? If so, it looks like a spray under pressure. I wonder if the axle vent got plugged, and then let loose?

Re: Rear diff leak

Yes - that is oil all over the axle housing and underside of the van. The oil mess starts immediately behind the u-joint. The Pinion seal perhaps? The other week when I installed the rear shocks there wasn't a single drip or anything. Drove home from Fruita last night (250 mi or so) w/ not a hiccup or any odd sounds either...

Re: Rear diff leak

Looks like the pinion seal to me too, but definitely check the breather tube and make sure it isn't blocked.

On edit: When the O-ring on my speed sensor failed, it made a mess just like your pic. I think the airflow while driving actually blows forward over the top of the pumpkin, then it gets slung around by the driveline. I thought for sure it was my pinion seal, but the axle shop discovered the bad o-ring.

Re: Rear diff leak

Thanks for the info guys. Checked the vent and it didn't appear blocked, and my google searches all pointed to the pinion seal but the pics I saw were pretty tame to my mess. I was driving in a pretty heavy rain doing 65-70 for @ 4 hrs straight too. Not sure if that contributed to the massive splatter effect. Any idea how to best clean this massive oil mess all off? Couple cans of brake cleaner followed by the pressure washer? Was thinking of topping it off and with it all clean drive it a little to verify leak source
Thx Again Guys

Re: Rear diff leak

To clean I'd go with the purple stuff for cleaning up a greasy mess - or start with some simple green. Best to start with the least to the most powerful. Heck you might just try some laundry detergent sprayed on it and then pressure wash.

Re: Rear diff leak

Well, found out why it puked so much fluid all of a sudden. The PO had some clown replace it who knows how long ago and they used the wrong sized seal and used plain ole silicon chalk to seal it up. Surprised it lasted as long as it did. Thankfully the shop gave all the guts a clean bill of health after they cleaned it all out.
Pheww...
