Thinking of upgrading want your thoughts

i have now a 97 E350 V10 with 143k miles

thinking of buying a 2003 E350 V10 with 171k mikes

what year did the V10 get more HP ???
what year did the rear disc brakes come out

i havent looked at the 2003 yet to see what gear rear end that is in it....

some of you might not know but i use my have for shows and pull a 13k plus trailer 2 to 3 weeknds a month....

i would love a diesel but i always look for other deals.....

the 2003 i like the appearance better its black grey int... non reflective windows...

but im not sure if the drive train is any better....

what are your thoughts????

Re: Thinking of upgrading want your thoughts

Axle code 34 looks to be 3.73 open diff.

According to Wikipedia, all E series vans came with the 2 valve V10's with 305hp.

Wikipedia could be wrong. There are some people on here that know everything about these vans (carringb) and hopefully they will chime in.

I have noticed that with axle codes, if you have a letter and a number, its a limited slip and if you have two numbers, its an open diff.

Re: Thinking of upgrading want your thoughts

V10's went to a 3 valve motor for the trucks. The vans stayed at 2 valves at least through 2003.

Disc brakes I think were 1999 model year. Super Duty's may or may not have had full floater rear ends, pretty much have to look at each van, easy to see if a hub cap is pulled.

I seem to recall there was a transmission improvement/change somewhere along the way as well.. but I could be totally wrong.

Re: Thinking of upgrading want your thoughts

All E-series motors are a 2-valve head, including new 2016s. For the 2000 model year HP was bumped from 265 to 305 HP with the change to "PI" heads. 2005 V10s got the TorqueShift transmission. Disc brakes did come out in '99. Full float vs semi-float varies by year and body style (RB vs EB, wagon vs cargo) so really its best just to look at the hubs.
