Transmission Problem??

Well, was out in the middle of nowhere (only place to be) and had something happen that’s new to me. (The SMB is a ’07 with 6.0, Atlas II transfer case and the 5R110W transmission.)

I had to descend a steep hill so put the transfer case in low range, the transmission in low (1) and launched over the edge. There wasn’t much in the way of engine compression holding me back, but it was a short run and the brakes worked fine. (By the way, this was in rear drive only. Front shifter was in neutral) When I got to a level spot, I came up with the following:
I was in the same gear no matter what gear I selected with the transmission shift lever. 1, 2, 3, or D. It felt like I was in Drive when I started to move.
Put lever in N and engine would rev up like normal.
Put lever in P and engine would rev up like normal.
Put lever in reverse, no engagement and throttle pushed like normal but engine would not rev up. I.E. nothing happened at all.

I shut it down, crawled underneath and all linkage was working fine on both the transfer case and transmission.
Got back in and started it up and everything was fine. Worked like normal and was fine for a few hundred miles on the drive home. I don’t like mysterious fixes and ending up somewhere with no reverse could be a serious problem.

Anyone have an idea what was going on?

Re: Transmission Problem??

It sounds electronic to me. Possibly maybe just a fault (i.e. fail safe mode) which sometimes can result simply from an unexpected speed signal input (or any off the other 500+ sensors). If it keeps working, I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm not so sure about using 2WD-LO for extreme downgrade braking. It's possible to spin the pinion nut off...

Re: Transmission Problem??

Thanks for the quick reply Carringb. I was hoping you'd chime in on this. I'll keep on driving it as I sure don't need to spend any more money on repairs after the new engine last year.
Not sure I understand about the pinion nut concern while in 4x2 low. Is that because the "load" isn't being shared by the front drivetrain?
Yeah, I hope you meant wouldn't too....
Again, thanks for the input.

Re: Transmission Problem??

We have a Quigley 4WD conversion and I would put it in 4WD Low Range on steep grades (paved) but without locking the hubs. The owner of Quigley told me at one of the SMB ralleys that was a poor idea due to the stresses it creates. Now I lock the hubs when I need to run downgrade in Low Range in order to stay off the brakes.

Putting a rig in 4x4 low puts LOTS of torque on the driveline. Putting it in 2WD low puts twice as much load still. I don't know how much redarding force the 6.0 makes, but whatever it is, is multiplied by about 3x by the transmission. Pinion nut (dana 60) is torqued to 250 ft-lbs. The shaft is splined, but if there's any slop high reverse torque pulls the pinion away from the bearing, and also in the "loose" direction of the nut, and also applying a load to the shims which it doesn't see going forward. I might be just paranoid, but I've done my share of axle damage (and its a D70!) so I try to be careful now.

Also, if you have an open diff, you're really only braking one tire and it could be easy to lose traction, which will spin that tire around backwards until it finds traction again, and that shock-load is a good way to break an axle shaft.

I wouldn't be as worried on a stout full-float axle, but the vans pretty much have that Dana 60 maxed out under normal factory 2WD conditions.

Re: Transmission Problem??

Simple question. When in low range and 1st gear, what did your speedometer read and what was your actual speed?

Re: Transmission Problem??

Both axles have equal torque applied to them as long as they have traction.

In 2WD low? Pretty sure the front axle doesn't have any torque in that situation....
