Rear axle replacement dana 60 70 or sterling FF ?

What is my best choice ? I'd like to end up with something with 4.10 and a locker and full floater of course. What is the best year salvage vehicle to get it out of?

I am in the process of doing this myself. Others more knowledgeable will likely chime in but do you want a bolt on swap? Does your rig have disc brakes?

D60-you'll still need spacers to get the width but there are more locker options than on a 70
D70-more bomber but hard to find. A bit wider so you don't need spacers.
Sterling-8x170 mm bolt spacing so you may need an adapter to match your front if you have 8/6.5.

Folks have done all of these so there are no easy answers. The search function on this website works pretty good. Here is some background reading for you.

I currently have a 94 e250 with dana 60 drum rear with 3.73. Can this be upgraded to disk brakes easily?

I'm not entirely certain what is entailed in upgrading the rear to discs. But disc brakes starting going on the vans in 1999. If it were me, it's certainly an upgrade I'd be looking at.

If you think you might want a Sterling you should give Chris at Ujoint a call. He sells the Sterling as part of his 4wd conversion.

Re: Rear axle replacement dana 60 70 or sterling FF ?

Well I plan on going Disk brakes so 99+ full floater is where I'll start. I plan on staying 8x6.5 and I think a dana 70 would be hard to find. It figures I just sold a 99 dana 60 a few months back that would have been perfect but I had different van then and everything was from a f350 and I figured I'd never use it. Whats the best all around locker for a dana 60? I dont think i want the extra complications of air for an ARB so eaton, track lock or auburn etc..

Dude that's a whole additional kettle of fish. Depends on what you want to use your rig for: ice or dirt.

Use the "Search" function and you will find threads on "locker". If it were me I would just want to continue those thread(s) with your questions to deepen the existing knowledge pool in those threads.

Re: Rear axle replacement dana 60 70 or sterling FF ?

I (like many here) went down the same road trying to decide which way to go. Here is my thread on the matter which might have some useful insight for you: viewtopic.php?f=39&t=13683

Short story is that I ended up keeping drum brakes and putting 4.56 gears, detroit locker, and 35spline axles in my full float d60.
