2005 6.0 diesel ODB-2? Found a code reader for this.

Ok so I have a engine light on and I was under the assumption that the 2005 diesel was ODB-2. The port under the steering column sure looks like it but my reader says its not connecting to it. Am I missing something simple here, am I plugged into the right port or maybe the diesel is just different enough that my scanner wont play nice? Ive used this scanner many times with other cars and have never had an issue with it.
Any advice/help on this would be appreciated.
Thank you
Tracey

It is OBD-II compliant but will only show emissions related code. Many, if not most, codes will not be read by a generic OBD-II reader. You need a Ford-diesel specific reader.

Is that unique to Ford diesel? I ask only because Ive used the reader I have on other cars, so I know it works. Ford must have wanted to keep all the fun for themselves.
Thanks for clearing that up.

Also check the fuse. On my truck it is fused with the power port. Bad cell charger blew mine once and the port had no power for the reader.

Sounds like a connection issue, first and foremost. Not sure what scanner you are using, but a ScanGauge will get some of the codes, but rarely all. For that you need something Ford-specific like carringB mentioned.

Some of the Bluetooth dongles will also provide codes when paired with the proper app.

Re: 2005 6.0 diesel ODB-2?

Found a reader that was able to pull the codes for me.....
P0234 turbocharger over boost condition and P0299 turbocharger under boost condition. Why both? I can understand one or the other but how do you get both? Any idea what this is? I suspect a bad or sticky turbo?
Its a 2005 6.0 with about 48000 miles on it.
Thank you
Tracey

Sticking vanes can give both under and overboost. The CPU asks for more boost, the stuck vanes don't respond and you get underboost; then the vanes move and the engine needs less boost and you get overboost.

Or they're stuck in the middle, so its out of spec on both ends.

Beware... Find the root cause first. Just swapping out the turbo means you'll get to do it all over again after not too long. Turbos don't "just go bad" unless you do lots of short trips or extended idling without fast-idle.

Ive got a good mechanic that I trust to do the right thing. I believe we are going to do a bunch of the "bullet proof" work just to get it out of the way and over with. EGR and updated oil cooler, bed plate leak, check and replace injectors if necessary, not sure off what else to do. Short trips have been and continue to be part of the vans life but I do get it out and up to temp often enough to get on the throttle hard and blow it out. It did sit a lot this summer do to us building a house but when it was used it did get driven hard.
What else can cause a turbo to be short lived besides the short trips and extended idling?

Either rust from a leaky EGR cooler, or carbon buildup from a faulty EGR valve. Sometimes however the turbo vane positioning solenoid can go bad too, but that wouldn't normally be suspect unless you pull the turbo and can't visibly see why its sticking.
