Check engine light and problem

Hi. I have a 2wd 2006 Ford E250 v8 with 130,000 miles. The other day I was driving 70 mph per hour when the check engine light came on. When the light came on, my speed suddenly dropped down to 60 or so and I felt a vibration below my feet. The van would not go faster than 60 or so. The check engine light and vibration went away about a minute later and I regained speed automatically. This happened about 3 times over a period of 15-20 miles. Each time lasted about a minute maybe two minutes tops. When I got home I heard the muffler pipe making pinging noises and the engine was making a clicking sound. The noises went away after a few minutes. Really don't hear those noises on a daily basis. I drove the van later that day and I did not have any problems. The spark plugs were changed about 20000 miles ago and the rest of the maintenance is up to date. i am going to take the van to the mechanic but I wanted to get some input beforehand. Thanks.

Will

I'm assuming you mean the muffler and engine were making these noises while idling, or after you cut the van off?

Do you have a Scanguage or code scanner? If your CEL came on some codes are set somewhere. What codes? If you don't have a scanner and want to find out for yourself before it goes to the mechanic any auto parts store (Autozone, Advance, O'reilley) can read them for you.

I'm guessing this is a 5.4 V8 but would like to know for sure.

It is a v8 5.4 engine. I don't have a scanner. I heard the noises after I turned the engine off and was unloading the van.

Have a scan done to see what codes it saved. I'm guessing O2 Sensors or Catalytic Converter. Noise you heard is hot exhaust cooling.

Re: Check engine light and problem

It could simply be a failing coil pack, and when it intermittently misfires, it's dumping unburned fuel into the exhaust and it burns off in the cat, and that's why the exhaust is making extra noise.

If it's intermittent, it may not save a hard code, but it will probably have a "pending code" which can be read with some readers. That pending codes should be in a "P030X" format, with the "x" being the misfiring cylinder.

HAHA, sounds EXACTLY like the typical 5.4 Coil Pack issue.

Run scan and see what the code is, if you're mot familiar. I am more then happy to help.
its a pretty simple fix.......just replaced one in OK and I am from MN
failed at 3AM in OK and I stopped, searched the web for a replacement and waited for them the parts place to open.

Re: Check engine light and problem

Thank you for all the suggestions. I took the van to Pep Boy for a free CEL scan. The scan said basically "nothing stored on computer." The van drove fine as if nothing happened and the check engine light has come back on since the other day.
