Dripping Oil Pan - 2wd 5.4L SMB

Here's something I noticed during an annual visual inspection of my van. I'm not handy with tools so my best contribution to saving money and aggravation is early detection. That and seeking advise from you all!

Please let me know if you agree with what appears to be a mechanic's "ok" mark on an oil leak. The leak is not producing drops on the carport. The stain barely rubs onto my fingers. It wasn't there last year when I looked and subsequently went to the dealer and they did not mention it.

Judging from the flow pattern it looks like a spot on the passenger front side of the pan leaked on a flow path sufficient to soil the front bottom lip and underside of the oil pan cover. I'm also not a mechanic and have no schematics handy, so let me know if this is not the oil pan.

Regular maintenance visit to dealer is coming up this November.

It could simply be a little overflow blowing out of the vent if it were a little too full on trans fluid. But just to be sure, next time you do a hard pull (mountain pass, pulling a trailer etc) take a peak under there again and look for drips.

Now that you have a photo clean it off with a good detergent and keep an eye on it. It may have been a one time event. Check it in a month and see if it is back. If it keeps reoccurring then then you may be able to track the leak down by checking your driving conditions and locations as stated below.

5.4 motors up until about 2005 were kinda known for small oil leaks at the head but nothing fatal. This can be seen by oil film coming from the rear of then passenger side head. Its never a flow rather a seeping that once cleaned off can take several weeks to a month or more for it to reach the lowest part of the transmission.

FWIW these heads are the same casting on both sides so this same condition exists on the drivers side too. Because the "leaking" corner on the left/drivers side is behind the front cover we never see it.

While this is disappointing the only real fix is having the heads planed flat and using repair type new head gaskets for reassembly. Costing upwards of $1,600 (and more) more frequent oil level checks can make this a very manageable situation that's more aggravation then cause for serious concern.
