Front drive shaft contacts my oil filter

I'm having issues with my front drive shaft contacting my oil filter. The van has a BPD oil cooler on it. Does anyone else have this issue? Is there a smaller diameter filter I can change to?

Re: Front drive shaft contacts my oil filter

Don't quote me but I seem to remember during my build (SMB 4x4) where SMB claimed the reason for the twin filter system was to filter better and to move the position of the stock filter to avoid it being hit on rough road situations. Seems I've heard complaints from other members but can't say if it's a 6.0 problem or SMB 4x4 conversion problem only.

Re: Front drive shaft contacts my oil filter

Who did the 4x4 conversion? Does it hit on normal suspension movement, or only when off road?

On my Salem-Kroger conversion there was about 1/8" clearance unless the zerk fitting was left in the front yoke, then it crashed. I installed a SMB remote oil filter setup.

Quadvan uses a piece to rotate the filter 90 degrees to the rear to avoid contact.

BPD may be able to help you to remove the stock oil filter and add remote filtration.

Re: Front drive shaft contacts my oil filter

On my 2004 SMB 4x4 system I had this issue with the stock Ford oil filter within a year. Back then the AMSOil remote was an additional SMB option and they had not discovered the problem yet. I added the AMSOil bypass at that time and that took care of it. About 18 months ago on my first bullet proofing session I added the BPD remote oil cooler and requested the mechanic to keep the bypass filter. He did it and it works perfectly with no drive shaft clearance issues but it was quite expensive to do adapt it. I do not know about smaller filters but one option for you would be for you to add the AMSOil bypass filter setup and do the same type of conversion. There might be a few pictures in my gallery or on my PC, I'll go dig them up. I'd recommend the mechanic too if you like to talk to him.

Re: Front drive shaft contacts my oil filter

SO here is the BPD oil filter adapter modified to connect to the AMSOil bypass filter.

That looks nice, we've had to do the same thing a few times. Is that a custom machined adapter piece to the remote lines?

Chris: According to the invoice he started with this:

https://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produ...?code=BP402-EA

There was some drilling and tapping on it I know. The hoses were upgraded to 1/2 I.D.

Re: Front drive shaft contacts my oil filter

It is an SMB x4 conversion. The balancing weight on the drive shaft contacts just barely during normal driving and hits pretty hard during fire road excursions.

Take the front driveshaft into a competent driveline shop and have them fix it. They may have to put the slip joint on the other end or use a different front yoke. It is worth taking care of it, because once it starts a leak you will need a tow.
