FICM Fun

Interesting article in the May DieselPower magazine on PSD FICM module failure. Claims dying batteries ruin the unit. Can cause hard, or no, start condition. Something called Flynn's Shop sells just a part of the module prone to failure for $500. Might be worth just having one on board. Looks easy to replace as long as that's the issue. Dealer wants twice as much. Can't find the link on the DP website however.

Re: FICM Fun

Just know that a FICM needs to be programmed. I have no idea if it can be programmed outside the vehicle, so be sure to check into that first.

Here's one TSB reference number on FICM issues: TSB 04-18-6. Haven't come across a downloadable copy.

FICM Fun

Didn't know that--wasn't mentioned in the article except to let it idle for a while. Maybe that does it?

Anyway, my PSD level of paranoia is reaching Glenn Beckian levels, so I ordered an AutoEnginuity scan tool to carry with me--already have the factory manuals. Nothing can stop me now...

Before the giant inflatable penis thing I would have made the assumption "the DP website" was refering to a diesel power thing. Now I'm not so sure.

Re: FICM Fun

I've heard more than one diesel mechanic mention that dying batteries can affect the FICM board. Turning a 6.0 over on a cold day might draw 500 amps. A typical passenger car draws less than 100. If you can monitor FICM voltage anything sustained below 46V to the FICM is bad news.

Bulletproofdiesel offers repair/rebuild service for $300. http://www.bulletproofdiesel.com/Repair ... ebuild.htm

They are also working on their own replacement. http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/genera ... alled.html

Re: FICM Fun

I have had the SMB in the shop to replace the FICM last fall. It brought up a trouble code on my Scangauge (P0611) and the van did feel a little sluggish, but we made it from Phoenix to San Diego without any problems. However, this winter we broke down on the 101 and had to leave the van in the shop and rent a car for several days. In this case the FICM was physically but needed to be reprogrammed.

Re: FICM Fun

Got the AutoEnginuity scan tool I bought fired up. After more than one call to AutoEnginuity, I was able to run some tests on the rig. I'm happy to report FICM voltage to the injectors is 49.5v-50.0v.

Plus, I can now monitor 494 sensors. And run many tests. And wonder why something is out of range. Can one become an Auto-hypochondriac? If anything will do it, it's a 6.0l PSD rig.

Re: FICM Fun

Can you purchase software to load in a PC? I'd want that.
