I've joined the club - bought a Sprinter

I flew to Oklahoma City, OK Wednesday, arriving at 3 pm and bought a 2008 Sprinter that I found on Craig's List. Wrapped up the transaction and hit the road for San Diego about three hours later.

Drove straight through with a 2 hour stop in Albuquerque for a shower and a two hour stop in Phoenix for lunch with a friend - just over 24 hours total trip.

From GPS:
Trip Distance: 1378.69 Miles
Trip Time: 19:34:02
Average Speed: 70.59 (that includes slow speeds in towns....)
Max Speed: 87.90

Driving speeds were between 70 and 85.
Hit one huge storm in Texas - unbelievable lightning, wind, rain and hail.
All in all a very comfortable ride.
20.3 mpg in one stage averaging 75 mph - impressed.

I'm going to enjoy these Sprinters!!!

Not giving up my 4X4 E350 SMB just yet but at twice the fuel mileage...

BajaSMB,

Well, welcome to the club!

So was the deal that good or was it that difficult to find a Sprinter that you had to go to Oklahoma?

The driving experience must have been pretty dramatically different from your other SMB. Any thoughts you want to share?

It appears that this will not be your first build so please let us how an old pro does it.

Good luck.

Chumley

I have been looking for several months for a good deal on a 2007 or 2008 with reasonable miles on it - I think the trip saved me 30%.

Can you detail why you looked for those years, are there specific years that are better and why?

2007 was the beginning of the new and current platform and engine, so I didn't want an older one. These Sprinters, even with high miles are in high demand and pricey and the newer the year model the higher the price. It was all about finding the best value. This will be my first Sprinter, but if everything works out, it will not be my last and I will look for a newer one down the road.

Does CCV do a poptop for Sprinters? I was also wondering what year vans require smog test here in Cali?

Re: I've joined the club - bought a Sprinter

I don't know about CCV but Sportsmobile does - there was Sprinter Penthouse Sportsmobile parked at the beach in front of our house Sunday evening - from Texas.

It would have to be Smog checked, I think 1999 is the cutoff year.
