Question for Espar D2 / Webasto Airtop 2000D Owners

Thinking strongly about my next major upgrade to the van, (Diesel heater or Solar Panels) I know Sportsmobile and Espar go hand in hand for diesel heat, but has anyone seen/used a Webasto?

Also - On diesel heaters in general: How much of the diesel smell ends up in the van? Do you notice it? Do your clothes end up smelling like they were soaked in diesel?

Re: Question for Espar D2 / Webasto Airtop 2000D Owners

A friend has an older, gas Webasto that works everytime I try it. I wish I could say the same of my Espar D4.

Lotsa heat--when it works. No diesel smell inside--when it works. Slight diesel smell outside--when it works.

So it's great--when it works.

Re: Question for Espar D2 / Webasto Airtop 2000D Owners

Espar D2. I bought it used and installed it myself, and quite frankly it is one of the best parts of our van. It does have a bit of a throaty jet engine noise to it outside, but the interior furnace noise isn't too bad. I haven't been in a rig with any other furnace so I really have no basis of comparison.

My only issue thus far was putting a muffler on the exhaust (which did tone down the exhaust note considerably) that ended up getting plugged with water which increased the back pressure sooting up the combustion chamber to the point where it wasn't firing anymore. I took the muffler off, ran the heater on kerosene to burn all the carbon out and it has been great ever since.

We have experienced little to no diesel smell - certainly nothing inside the van. If there was any diesel fumes my wife would be telling me to fix it or get a different heating solution.

I have a webasto. It is pretty noisy but it works great. There is no smell at all in the van. I've heard you can rebuild them and I have thought it might make mine more quiet. It sounds like the fan bearings more than anything. I love the thing. Domo orogato mr webasto.

Currently have a Little Buddy and roll with 5 extra coleman propane tanks.

Alas, I am always looking for the next greatest upgrade. Built in heat and solar are on my top upgrades list.

Love my Espar, no problems or complaints about the exhaust. If I had to choose between solar/Espar I would go with solar. We dry camp almost exclusively and not worrying about keeping the batteries charged makes all the difference. As suggested you can go with a portable heater for the time being.

I agree. If It was my rig id go solar 1st. Feeds my fridge, ext/int lights, tv etc.

Ive never needed a heater but then again I've never camped in the snow or where it's below 20s.

Re: Question for Espar D2 / Webasto Airtop 2000D Owners

I installed a Webasto Dual Top which heats air and water. It works great, heating the interior form 38 to about 60° in ten minutes. No smell at all if I don't open the rear doors (the exhaust) is located in the back on driver side and very low noise even if the heater is located in the van, not Under the floor as usual. It is delivered with a muffler and outside noise is also unsignificant.
I also installed Webasto engine pre heater and stove, both runing with diesel. I'm really happy with these appliances.

Replaced propane with D2 on my own. Also added muffler. Works great. No problems.
