Re: Factory Sprinter 4x4
Pretty cool! Wonder how much that will cost, as Sprinters are already pretty spendy to start with.
I watched the accompanying video. Snoozer, just the van driving in snow up a mountain. I got curious and tried to figure out where the video was shot. I figured it was in the Austrian Alps: See http://goo.gl/maps/2skMl for a Google Map if you are curious. There are some seriously fun roads over in that area, although I've only driven them in warmer weather.

Re: Factory Sprinter 4x4
Same story, different day. Maybe it will come true this time, maybe not. Factory Sprinter 4x4 has been rumored for years.

Re: Factory Sprinter 4x4
It certainly looks better than any one else's copy of it (Promaster, etc.) Maybe in 15 years they will have been in the U.S. long enough for me to be able to afford a used one.

Re: Factory Sprinter 4x4
I believe those are Michelin LTX® M/S2 on that van, which is my first all around tire choice. My preferred Winter tire choice is studded, Hercules. But the Michelins have worked well most Winters and Summers.

Re: Factory Sprinter 4x4
Not factory, but for serious off roading how hard is it to build something like this?

it is built up in Island by a guy who do this with some more. It is a lot of bodywork to get the tires on it with less lift. Dana axles in!
Very good work and not cheap at all.
So amazing!

Re: Factory Sprinter 4x4
This appears to be more of a commitment from MB to bring the sprinter 4x4 option to the US market than I've seen before.
Never a done deal until they are on the lots for sale.....but enough to get me thinking.
The odds on the following options becoming available in the next 2-3 years appear good IMHO.
1. Sprinter with MB factory 4x4; 6cly diesel and low range optional.
2. New Ford transit with Quigley 4x4 and new (to US) Ford diesel and perhaps the 6cly ecoboost.
3. Nissan NV with Quigley 4x4. No clue on motor options, but the new 5.0 cummins is a possibility.
Not a bad range of options for eventually replacing our 2006 SMB sometime in the next 3-5 years.
One question; I've heard (from owners) and read that the trannys are a weak spot on the Sprinter vans. Any validity to this or is this concern an anecdote/internet folklore?
