Thinking of changing Food cabinet

I am not digging the slide out food cabinet. I have bought two hinges that match the ones in the van and I am thinking of pulling the door off the sliding part and just having a normal cabinet. It seems that it would increase space and the pillows on the sofa will not always be in the way. I was thinking of some wire shelving with a lip but do not want rattling. Anyone done this? Pictures?

Do you mean the slide out pantry? That is one of our favorite features of our SMB.

Yes. Every time I go to open it, it hits the pillow on the sofa. I think that it take up too much space. Have you ever taken it out. It opens a ton of space up. I have not committed 100% yet because I do see some up side to it.

Re: Thinking of changing Food cabinet

When we had our RB50 built we had them not install the slide out and just make it a cabinet with three adjustable/removable shelves and a swing door. My initial though on the slide out was that it was neat but reduced the usable space. I'm always amazed at how much food my wife manages to pack in that cabinet.

Re: Thinking of changing Food cabinet

We have the full height pantry and it drives me nuts because it is hard to pack efficiently and awkward to load because it pulls out into the aisle. One of my next projects is to pull it out and install shelves or drawers. Will reuse he existing door.

skijunkie,

That is exactly what I was thinking. Thanks for the picture. It gives me the perfect way to put shelves in.

Re: Thinking of changing Food cabinet

Tex, now you've got me thinking about this too. We have an older EB30 walk-through layout and the individual compartments in the slide-out pantry are not tall enough - can't stand up standard bottles of store bought marinades, salad dressings, etc. It fits standard cans and stuff like that, but I'm wasting a lot of space laying things down on their side because they won't fit standing up. It would be nice to adjust the shelves to our liking to increase storage. Plus, ours doesn't take advantage of the curve of the van wall; just wasting space there.

What do they call the shelving brackets and supports as pictured in skijunkie's post?

Re: Thinking of changing Food cabinet

We thought a lot about layout once we had the penthouse installed. Ours is a walk through design.

cabinet under construction...bigger then I pictured

Cabinet installed

Needed door opening down for access when penthouse is lowered

Keep all the heavy stuff in bottom drwrs

Over flow....longer term storage...normally refills drawers

We use an ice chest normally. The melted ice water in it can get very
funcy (sp) in it in just a few days of traveling. We installed a continuous
water drain and the bottom of the ice chest now stays very clean for
3-4 weeks.
