Lost propane tank drain tube cap?

Here's a photo of my propane tank drain tube connection area with a very thin and cracking (no doubt from age) heat sealed plastic inner cap over what I think are steel hose connection threads.

I think there was an exterior plastic cap that went over this. You can see the broken plastic connector piece it used to be attached to.

Does anyone have pictures or know what this connection area looks like under the heat-sealed cap?

Should I be concerned and can I source another cap? Probably just for dust cover purposes, but cleanliness appears to be a priority with these tank connections.

I also don't like the looks of the rust. Doesn't seem like a very good powder coat for a three year old van from SMB West.

Here's a link to the thread that started me on this discussion because someone thought they needed an access panel lock to protect their propane fill tube from tampering. This drain tube is under the van and nothing is keeping anyone from tampering with it.

Joey, you actually aren't missing anything. The broken off part is from below, where there is a ring it used to be connected to. No doubt weather and age took it's toll. Your cap is still in place though. I wouldn't worry about this at all. I've seen tons of old rusty propane tanks on RVs and they still work fine in much worse shape. Unless you smell propane I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Re: Lost propane tank drain tube cap?

Thank you so much for the info. I feel much better now. I'm surprised your connector is still attached. Maybe a neighborhood cat pulled mine off.

cheers
