Why are Tambour Doors so difficult to buy in america?

When I google for Tambour door kits, the camper van related items are mostly in the UK. So much so that I am tempted to order from over seas - although i'd hate to pay pricey shipping and other potential fees.

These are very popular doors in the t5 VWs I see, so it's surprising that there isn't at least one van part source I can find online with these in the US.

Does anyone have any leads? The best I was able to find was this website which i may opt for: http://www.cshardware.com/wood-products ... mbour.html

but ideally I would like simple ones like these:

I love them too. I had an Airstream with lots of tambour doors and I think they are great. They are probably so expensive because of what goes in to making them. Mike and Paul, in the thread below, build some. I tried to find where they built them but couldn't. It's a huge thread and worth the week or so it will take you to read it. Enjoy!

This guys is an amazing woodworker and does things right. He has several builds on Expo if you want to see more of his work.

Re: Why are Tambour Doors so difficult to buy in america?

Some time ago I was looking for metal Tambour doors as they are a huge space saving great idea. Several USA manufacturers have them but being all aluminum they're not cheap. IIRC they came as a system which included track etc.

Doing a quick Google search there are naturally 1,000's of images and sites to visit. Here's one of the first that popped up: http://woodentambourdoors.com/produc...cessories.html

And one for high-end aluminum versions, tend to be higher in security if needed: https://www.rollok.com/Millwork_cabinetry.html

Re: Why are Tambour Doors so difficult to buy in america?

I have wanted to retrofit my EB 50 with tambour doors for years now. Never have dove into the project though. GTRV uses them. I emailed them earlier this year and he just recommended to search for manufacturers and order the size I need. He also said to go with wood as plastic will rattle. I'm guessing aluminum would rattle as well.

thats good to know wood doesn't rattle. I've been really set on the look of aluminum, i dunno why since i want everything else to match for the most part.... maybe i'll just settle w/ wood though after hearing that.

It does seem like ordering custom ones from random websites which are mostly made up of text and parts numbers is the best way to go.... just seems like the biggest shot in the dark at the same time! No one even really has good example photos, most are blueprints or the same stock photo - lol....

i've gotten to the point where i am damn tempted to make my own... it just sucks b/c i'd rather just spend that time making money at work and buying em tbh.

For those considering the diy route, I plan following an idea I saw on instructables:

Use corrugated plastic (think plastic lawn signs) that comes about 1cm thick. On the backside, cut out every other "cell wall." Doing this allows for the flex.

Super cheap tambour doors, available in any color.

Here's where I got the idea:
