Hard time filling up at gas station

On my 2005 Chateau, I have a hard time with pretty much every gas pump. They always click off as if the tank is full, but it happens every couple seconds. I usually hold it upside down to be able to get full flow out of the handle. Is there something I can do to help with this?

Re: Hard time filling up at gas station

Wait a minute, you didn't say what engine you have but you did say that you "gas" up. I have a diesel and the "Harpoon Mod" cured for me the same symptoms that you have. It entails dropping the fuel tank and shortening by cutting (do not use an electric anything for that) the plastic vent and fill tubes which stick too far down into the tank. Here you go:

http://www.guzzle7pt3.com/harpoon.php

HOWEVER, what engine do you have? Because the Harpoon Mod is apparently NOT appropriate for gasoline fueled vehicles:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/57104 ... -up-2.html

In addition to asking here, you may want to go to the following website and post your problem in the appropriate engine forum and ask for help:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.php

Good Luck!

Re: Hard time filling up at gas station

Thanks! In the link, it said that this mod helps with the last few gallons. I'm experiencing difficulty even when empty. Do you think that these long vent tubes are still to blame?

Re: Hard time filling up at gas station

Dang, I know a little about the 7.3L PSD from reading and working on mine, but nothing about the V10. Maybe start here:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/12013 ... ng-up.html

And then just log into your engine's forum and search that forum (there is a "Search this Forum" box to the right).

My guess which is only internet folly is that you have a clogged vent tube which is preventing air from exiting the tank which is causing back pressure which is causing the pump handle to click off. But that is just a mere guess. Apparently gassers have an evaporative cannister which may contribute to that restriction? Search for "evaporative cannister" "problems filling up" etc. in your engine's subforum and you will find the solution to your problem:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum49/

I know how frustrating it can be, that's why I was happy to find the Harpoon Mod for my engine. But unless you find that the V10 owners at ford-trucks.com recommend it for the V10, don't do it.

Thanks E350! I'll check out the links and see if I can find anything.

Re: Hard time filling up at gas station

Might want to read this thread closely, it indicates that it is a common problem requiring replacement of the evaporative cannister and there is a Ford TSB on the problem:

http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum49/

Good Luck!

Re: Hard time filling up at gas station

That happens often on my 7.3 filling up too, try pulling the nozzle out a bit from your fill tube so it's not shoved in all the way, works for me.

Same problem here. Sometimes REF's idea works, sometimes not. It's a pain. My 2002 fueled easier than my older 95, but both are tough.
