Rented a single wheel scale.....

Rented a single wheel scale last week to check the weight on each corner of the van. I have weighed the van many times on a trucking scale each time I add things but have always been concerned with balance. No matter what I have done on the full size scale I have been unable to weight each corner correctly.

Even this commercial grade scale was off compared to the others the company had and we ended up driving up to their location to take a series of measurements.

Below is what we ended with after three different scales and then averaging the weights with what appeared to be the most accurate.

This is will full fuel, 20 gallons of water with my daily photo gear and me in the drivers seat.

LF = 2060 RF = 1920
LR = 2760 RR = 2860

Are there thoughts on correct weight distribution for safety and handling?

Did you crib up an adjacent wheel to match scale height?

Re: Rented a single wheel scale.....

Are those differences so significantly different to cause concern?

FWIW most times I've seen individual wheel scales used each corner had its own scale to better reflect actual weight as the tire contact patch would experience. I can't say cribbing three wheels while weighing one at a time isn't accurate but the relatively minor differences observed seem close enough to be safe for most kinds of driving.

Just MHO ya know, subject to being vastly incorrect.

Agreed JWA, we had the extra time so we decided to get it as close as we could.....

Good----safe motoring!

BTW I find it admirable you went to these lengths---makes me think about doing it myself just for grins. I'm sure it would be enlightening and interesting too.

Re: Rented a single wheel scale.....

I think the delta between each corner is very reasonable.

The only thing that stands out to me is there seems to be a diagonal imbalance. I would expect to see F/R bias, and possibly L/R bias due to layout and loading. But for LR to be the light rear corner, FR to be the light front corner, means something is off with the springs, i.e. a sagging leaf springs or a sway bar bracket that has come out of position. Or maybe even a low tire.

Re: Rented a single wheel scale.....

I have the 20 gallon water tank on the passenger rear. Think that would do it? Sway bars are disconnected front and back right now and the tires are off by 5 psi front to rear.

I am surprised how close everything is actually. I had assumed prior to the measurements I would have been much further off.

I think my biggest question now is should I have more weight towards the front or leave it as is?

Never a problem for me during the holidays. Just eat a second (or third) helping.

That would explain the light RF but not the light LR.

Its so close its probably nothing to worry about though, and probably within the expected margin of error for your measuring method. When we weigh our cars we use 4-corner scales on a rigid, leveled frame on a concrete slab, with ball bearing under the scale plates so the suspension can't bind.

Also another trick is to compress each end of the car and let it bounce back, so help reduce error from stiction in the shocks.
