Of Adventure Trailers

I'm kicking around the idea of a trailer. All the ExPoers seem to be about is RTT and how much junk you can cram into it.

I want to take a different route- namely having a full blackwater bathroom and a large second fridge or powered cooler. The remainder would be storage, fold out cooking surfaces etc. Matching the 8 on 6.5 bolt pattern is important.

For starters I have a little homemade trailer that I picked up cheap, and was thinking about redoing it from the ground up- it's small and light, and I own it. Then again the only thing I would be keeping is the frame itself, and the title.

So the other option would be to start with something like this:
http://denver.craigslist.org/sno/4044717758.html

But I don't know much about what they're worth as a base or what to look for/avoid. One thing I do know is the SMB can handle a lot bigger- but I'm looking for an M100/101 or M416 size; not M105 or bigger because I need to be able to handle it.

So yeah, general Adventure Trailer base conversation anyone?

Re: Of Adventure Trailers

I like all the 101 builds over on Expo. I have a 101 that I bought w/o the frame, I just got the body. I put a 3500# axle and a frame under it and it tows great behind the van. I have found locally a almost "new" 101 and the guy is asking $750. Its way cleaner and nicer then mine, so we will see.

The off road cargo trailers are nice as well. I think the trick would be not to go to big. 5x10 seems to be a common size for them. The back opens for access to the kitchen (much like a teardrop). Inside you could have room for the bed or porta potty or whatever you configure. Initial outlay would be minimal.

To me the 416 would be to small. You might not ever even see it behind the van. Also the pricing of them seem to be high for age/what you get. I know the Jeep crowd loves them.

Build it Jage! You've got a great canvas there and, um, lots of free time.

Re: Of Adventure Trailers

Is this an interim step, or long term solution?

You might consider looking at something like these;

Re: Of Adventure Trailers

The m416/Bantom M100 are great behind a jeep or small truck. I had a M100 and it was way to small and short for the width and wheelbase of the van. You could not even see it in the mirrors. Made backing up a real task. I built a trailer based on a Ram 50 PU bed it's OK but wider would be better. For off road ideally the trailer should have the same track width as the tow vehicle. That is how all the military units are set up. The M101 & M105 are a very good size but heavy. I think the perfect starting point would be a M1101. They have an aluminum box, not to heavy and have 8 on 6.5 lug pattern. They have recently become available at http://www.govliquidation.com/

Re: Of Adventure Trailers

Have you though about chopping the front off a wrecked van? That would give you matching bolt pattern and track width (which matters in soft terrain) and lots of enclosed lockable storage.

Don't forget that a few years back there were some posts here by Pikes Peak Trailers out of Woodland Park, CO.

Re: Of Adventure Trailers

You definitely want one wide and long enough to see where it is behind you. One way to do this by extending the tung. Backing up a short trailer is a difficult task.

Re: Of Adventure Trailers

I've wanted something like that for a long time. It would be awesome to build out a mini Kimberley Karavan type setup. Shower/head with storage and a good set of batteries with solar in a small pop up trailer design.

How long do you figure in relation to an EB van?
