Heaviest load in a V8 Smb

I am looking at several boats and am wondering, what's the heaviest load you have hauled? I might need to start looking at selling the SMB due to weight requirements.

Are you talking about a gasser V8?

If not, I towed ~7000lb with my 6.0L.

Carringb is off the charts, but he's running a V10.

Yeah, which V8? My 460 is probably rated for about 10k. I'm assuming you mean the 5.4 but if it's an e350 chassis I think it's 7 or 8k.

I am looking at three boats, two of which top out 8-10k. Only one is 5k....

Re: Heaviest load in a V8 Smb

I had a late 90's SMB, E-250HD with the 5.4 V8. Fully loaded the van was at around 7,600#. My trailer weighed between 4,500# and 5,000# with around 350# of tongue weight (tandem) for a GCVW of around 13,000#. I towed around 30,000 miles with this setup, including over a number of large passes (Homestake, Siskiyou, Tehachapi, etc. Zero problems and I ran a Scangauge so I could keep an eye on things. SMB is still going strong (new owner) with 150k on the clock.

I got around 12 mpg towing, and around 17mpg (highway) with just the loaded van.

I did sometimes keep it out of overdrive when towing - just depending on the terrain.

Transmission would be at around 180º or so at the top of a pass; coolant around 206º (which is what it was always at, towing or not).

I never felt a lack of power, but then I don't expect to roar over a pass, towing, at 60mph. If you do, you might find it lacking (not sure, as I never pushed it that hard).

Viva

PS: I don't know what your GVWR, GCWR, and GAWR-rear are, but with the full meal deal above, I was close to maxing out on all ratings (GVWR, GCWR, GAWR). Maybe you'll be fine with the E-350, but you'd need a LOT more capacity than I had with the E-250HD. I don't know whether my van would have physically pulled a 10,000# trailer, but I would have been WAY over capacity on all ratings.

Yeah - I think a crew cab chev duramax is in my future. I love Fords - have owned many in my days but with all the problems the 6.0 has I think I'll pass and pick up a Chev or Megacab Dodge.

My 2012 Ram 3500 Laramie Crew dually longbed 4x4 cummins 6.7 auto diesel is amazing!

Had a 2011 Silverado 6.7 V8 diesel, nice and a 2002 Ford 7.3, also nice, but Cummins Ram
is awesome. Quiet, solid, roomy, capable. Have 4.1 rear diff, not 3.73, get about 12-14 miles per gallon with a Big Truck Camper & Trailer.

It depends quite a bit on where you are and what you're towing over...! If you're going over passes of course it's a different world...

If you're working with boats, concentrate on wheelbase - first... It helps at the docks, and the sway that comes with a lower-density cargo. It doesn't matter how big that engine is, or how solid the frame is, if you're spun around, or your wheels start slipping at the ramp! Good luck!

Re: Heaviest load in a V8 Smb

I tow our travel trailer a few times a year 500-1000 miles at a time with a GCW of ~14,500lbs and it does just fine even over long grades with 5.4L, 34" tires and 4.56 gears. About a month ago I hauled a CAT 259 skidsteer (track loader) on a steel equipment trailer which brought my combined weight to ~18,000lbs and it definitely let you know it was back there! In all reality, the skidsteer put me over the legal limit for towing a tag trailer on a class C license in CA (you are allowed 26,000lbs combined, with no more than 10,000lbs of that being a tag trailer), so anything that I could legally tow is not a problem with the 5.4L.
