Picked up a beater pontoon boat......

Picked up a beater pontoon boat last week out in the desert. Put it in the water last night for the first time with Tien and it runs great.

Neck snapping top speed of 18 mph.

Looking forward to many good times with it.

Side note question. Climbing the grade with the boat it was about 105 out. I was a little concerned about tranny temp not having a gauge. At the top of the mountain I used the laser temp gauge on the bottom of the pan and it read 185. Where is tranny temp normally measured. How far off do you think my quick measurement method was?

Re: Picked up a beater pontoon boat......

Trans temps are measured by the PCM in the valve body.

Aftermarket gauges use the transmission test port but I don't know the fluid path for that port.

Don't you have a ScanGauge? It can display trans temp with an X-gauge function.

So far, I've generally seen higher temps on my Banks gauge than my UltraGauge, but I suspect the valve body temps will climb faster, so I plan on keeping an eye on that next time I'm backing the the trailer up a steep hill.

On the highway, I don't get too worried about trans temp. Last weekend climbing Santiam pass I was at about 215F on the Banks gauge, close to 100F outside, pulling my 12k trailer. I get more concerned at low speeds (mostly backing) when the see the needle move quickly, and either change what I'm doing or give it a short break.

Picking up a "beater boat in the desert" gave me an image of a craft would be used in the landscaping the front yard or that you would turn into a play boat in the back yard for the kids. Your find looks great.

Very nice Brent. Be sure to lube the trailer bearings before going too far or fast though. Those little wheels turn really fast at highway speeds, and wheel bearings are often times neglected. After traveling for half an hour or so at speed, stop and feel them to make sure they aren't too hot. Have a great time. Steady as she goes Captain. Safe sailing..................

Thx for the info Carring & Artic. She is running great so far. Putting in as much time on her as possible with the summer light. Slowly going through everything and checking, tweaking and repairing small things....

So you have one bottomless moneypit towing another bottomless money pit?

Looks like a lot of fun though.

Re: Picked up a beater pontoon boat......

It's been a blast so far. We have had it out 9 or 10 times since we have had it. We used it as a beverage base camp a few weeks ago at a beach frisbee tournament. You can't drink on the beach but you can if three feet off the beach and floating. Strange law but the boat was an important part of keeping us hydrated throughout the day.
