Inflatable kayaks/canoes?

Looking for opinions on inflatable kayaks/canoes. 2 person capable for lakes, lagoons, estuaries etc, no rapids. Trying to keep weight off of the roof since we have a manual top. I see a lot of options on the internet, any brand preferences or things to look out for?

Re: Inflatable kayaks/canoes?

I have one of these: http://www.meijer.com/s/sevylor-tahi...Sporting_Goods

Used it as a tender on a small sailboat of mine in which guise it actually saved my boat in Baja once, and we have taken it on several multi day river trips as an extra people carrier as well. I would rate it as halfway decent and it is cheap! It is actually quite rugged, certainly better than I expected and very stable. Cons? The backrests/seats don't stay in place and it is really hard to paddle in a stiff wind as so much of it sticks up above the water. I would guess this affects most of the similarly shaped kayaks. It is not much fun on a long flat water paddle, it does take a lot of effort compared to a proper kayak. The mooring ring and plastic skirts at the front and rear of the boat tear easily and we ended up having to lace a webbing line around the whole boat to use as a mooring line.

I'd say it's a good way to start out as you won't lose too much if it doesn't work as you want.

I bought this one used off Craigs.

I like it because its open, I don't feel like I would get caught inside if I roll it.

Not trying to put you on the spot or anything but what did you want to spend on your IK?

Tappy
Advance Elements at Campmore $629

IMHO, i think the weight of the fabric
and puncture proof is important

Story:
when i went to the local kayak store here on the
california coast, filled with high end kayaks
paddles, all quality to paddle from the North Pole around the world :)

as i casually leaned against a kayak standing upright
i sheepishly asked if they had a source for a lowly inflateable

he pointed to the one i was leaning on ....

it be a pretty stout thing when inflated

just sayin'

Re: Inflatable kayaks/canoes?

If you are looking for a top quality tandem IK with a bomber warranty the best on the market would be made by Aire.

http://www.aire.com/aire/products/?type=33

I currently have an Aire Strike IK but have been looking at a new product on the market made by Sotar. The Sotar ATV was designed by one of my friends for his commercial operation and is designed to carry overnight gear. Sotar currently only offers it in a single configuration and I don't think they plan on producting a tandem.

Link to the Sotar ATV

None of these IK's fall into the cheap pool toy catagory and are top of the line white water equipment.

Disclaimer......I am a big fan of Sotar Boats. Check out this link for a picture of me running the Green Wall on the Illinois River in Southern Oregon on the Sotar website.

Re: Inflatable kayaks/canoes?

Great timing with the topic. I too have been looking for a 2 person inflatable kayak that is a step above the target/walmart special. But not the super performance top of the line either.

I am primarily going to use it on lakes and ocean..... no rivers. I do have 2 single very nice kevlar/fiberglass kayaks for the ocean. This would be more one I can take along and blow up at camp sites and have onboard when needed. I have been eyeing the advance elements one posted above for some time. Wouldn't want to spend more than that.

Also what would you use to inflate the kayak if you don't have onboard air..... just curious.
