WTB: Espar D4, new.

This coming week I'm going to buy the Espar D4.
Does anyone or any forum sponsor want to make a sale?

The lowest new price I've come across is $1500ish. Obviously you'll have to be lower lol.
(Sadly I'm very cheap or as some might say politely... frugal, so I shop for the best price & service )

Sell me!

BEST method of contact with me is my email- Bbasso@yahoo.com

Thank you.

Re: WTB: Espar D4, new.

Bought mine new off of eBay from a Canadian reseller for ~$750 with the install kit. Seller was named "cool-heatparts", and it was a best offer type of listing. If you don't find anyone here selling one, it was the cheapest I found (by about $500) and I looked for quite a while before I bought.

Good Luck!

Re: WTB: Espar D4, new.

Thank you for the info, but I'm not familiar with eBay and also nervous about buying from outside the USA...
I think I'm getting too old to learn new tricks LOL

To be specific...

Bbasso,

You might want to have a read of this thread:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/archiv ... 377--.html

Perhaps strong consideration should be given to a D2 over the D4. Thermostat placement, proper insulation, curtains to reduce the heated space, etc. are important as well.

But but... bigger is better LOL
I honestly hate cold weather, and would rather have too much heat than not enough.
And have the option later to use in something much biggger thwn my current rig.

Thanks.

Call Rixens, they specialize in Espar installations and repairs. SMB West uses them.

Second this, Jim Rixen did some work on our Espar unit a few years back, you can search my post history for more info. Jim is a stand up guy, and backs up his products 100%, I am more than happy whenever I get the chance to recommend Jim.

Hey , I am right there with you on hating cold weather!

We are also beginning a diesel van build and have been researching heaters for quite some time. Have read countless threads. I share your "option" thinking, but have come to realize it rarely happens for something like this which requires significant installation effort and commitment to holes, etc.

So, for our build, an EB Cargo with a CCV (large volume) pop top I am pretty nailed down to installing a D2. With very good insulation, window covers, good heat distribution via ducting, should be more than enough for 90% of our camping and certainly down to 20 deg F.

I base this, in part, on what we have used for the past three years in our non poptop EB passenger van w LOTS of windows and mediocre insulation. We used a Wave 3 catalytic heater. It is totally radiant, has no fan and puts out 3000 btus on high. We found that running the Wave 3 on high for about 15 mins was enough to get the interior temp up to the low 60's when it was 27F and snowing outside. After about 15 mins we needed to drop that to low (1500 btus) to maintain comfort. The D2 puts out more than twice as much heat and distributes via a fan. We have about twice as many cu feet to heat w the PTop. The PT van body is better insulated and we elected to insulate the PT and the canvas. Issue with catalytic is the moisture they introduce into the cabin, so that is not an option for our new build, at least as the primary heat source.

We also camped in our non PT van when we went skiing. It was -2 outside and we were at an RV park with electric. We used a 1500watt tower style electric heater which on max equals 5100 btus. This unit had a thermostat we set at 70, it ran on high about every 15 mins before dropping to low. While sleeping, we dropped the tstat to 60, otherwise it was just too hot. Again, the D2 puts out 50% more heat than the 1500 watt heater.

Greg at Lubrication Specialists is a guru about these diesel fired heaters - when I discussed with him, he said D2. You want these things to run on high for a while to keep the injector from sooting up from incomplete combustion. What happens with the D4 is it will not run on high long enough before you are too hot and have to turn it down, or it shuts itself off. It will run hot then shut down instead of cycling to low. This will lead to reliabilty issues. This is from a guy who rebuilds/services/installs these heaters and has Webasto and Espar experience. Sounds like Jim, recommended ^^ is worth chatting with as well.

So back to our build- D2 for primary heat for the vast majority of our camping will strike a good balance between comfort and relaibility. IF we find we need additional heat for the more rare situations, I can supplement with a Wave 6 (6,000 btu) catalytic for a few hundred bucks. I would run that on disposable propane tanks for those few times we would need it. One small tank will run it for about 8 hours. If we are spending so much time in super cold weather, then there will have to be many other upgrades considered for the build. Heated plumbing, batteries, engine heat, water tank protection, etc. First part of that process will be - "why are we going to some place SO cold, and for SO long we need to do that. And do we really want to dothat inna van" I have thought about it and I would probably install a second D2 system so I could have back up and be able to step up heating if needed.

You might want to experiment with something - grab three 1500 watt heaters and put them in your van. Turn them all on high and see how that feels and how long they run before cycling off, or you have to get out lf he van! That will closely approximate a D4.

Re: WTB: Espar D4, new.

Also, two D2 systems would be around $1800 vs $1600 for a D4. If mo' is betta

Re: WTB: Espar D4, new.

Thank you, I've sent an email to Rixens asking for a quote.

As for D2 vs D4, I see what you are saying and will look further into this.
I currently have a Mr. Buddy heater w/ low and high. I can honestly say high will chase me out of my van in minutes lol. But isn't very cost effective long term with no way to set a desired temp. I also have used a 1500wt plug in and it runs at low setting too.
I have insulated the van (EB and hightop) very well, so well the heat says for a long time and remains comfortable even in low 30's without any running heat source.
But with some future travel plans to colder climates I want to have a safe heating system that will cost less over time, less effort while providing a more comfortable arrangement.

Again, I'm cheap and want to have the best and biggest i can afford lol
Sometimes stubborn, ugh.
