WTB Penthouse bed for my Sportsmobile

Hi there,

My SMB was outfitted as a day trip rig and the original owner did not order the bed that goes in the penthouse. I never knew it was optional and thought it came with the Penthouse top.

I need to buy one. If anyone has one for sale in the Southern California area, please let me know.

Thanks

I believe you can purchase them directly from SMB West in Fresno... If you wish to go that option.

That was my original idea...the bed price is reasonable at under $500.

I contacted them twice already, both times I was put to voice mail and so far no callback.

I think they are too busy to bother with such a small order. I've heard they have a very large order backlog.

Where are you located? Call Austin or Indiana. They will answer, respond and help. I've never had any luck with Fresno.

Better yet, go to the hardware store and buy a piece of 3/4 plywood, measure and cut in to two pieces (for a 2 piece bed of course). Any pop top owner can give you the sizes. Go to a foam/upholstery place and buy a piece of 4 inch standard foam to fit. Then have it upholstered somewhere.

Plywood (exactly what SMB uses): $40 and you'll have leftovers for another project or kindling
Foam (exactly what SMB uses): $100 at the very most, probably half that
Upholstery (the only tricky part of the equation): maybe $20 for material and free to make if you know someone who can sew. If you want to get really fancy add a zipper down one side. If you can't do it yourself I can't imagine it costing much to have two covers sewn up.

total: $160 I guess SMB is charging you the other $340 for the zipper or perhaps just because they are SMB. Enjoy!

I need to make a PH bed extension. What's a good way to fasten the foam and upholstery to the plywood?

Email Fresno. They seem to be better at answering emails.

You don't need to. SMB doesn't. Just upholster a zippered cover and that holds it all together just fine.

Edit: it may have changed on newer models but it is just done with a zippered cover on my 95.

The upholstery is stapled to the wood then they screw on a veneer to cover it up.

Re: WTB Penthouse bed for my Sportsmobile

Good info guys, thanks.

I would like a one piece bed that can attach to the top like the SMB OE one. I know a great upholstery shop, and we could use memory foam which we prefer. I really don't have a lot of time to put into making one, so I would prefer to buy an OE one if there's one for sale close by.

My SMB has a plush gray upholstery which we really like...any idea where I could find some fabric to match? Perhaps SMB Indiana (who built it originally) can sell and ship to me. I think the same upholstery on the underside would be nice looking too rather than the veneer. Would need to put some protection where the rails go I suppose.
