Running Engine on Wood Gas

Saw this on an episode of Mountain Men. Never heard of it before but like many things it's been around for a long time.

That was very common in germany after the world war...
gas was too expensive so a lot of people switched to wood gas system. It works fine but is is a hell of work and you will always have black hands
