RIP Johnny Winter

Died earlier today in Switzerland at the age of 70.

Released 25 albums, but never won a Grammy. What a shame.

Re: RIP Johnny Winter

I saw Johnny & Edgar on July 24, 1976 at an outdoor concert in Michigan. I remember the date because it was my wife's birthday. RIP

Re: RIP Johnny Winter

What a sad loss. As a blues musician and VP of the Santa Barbara Blues Society, this hits home hard. He was the master acoustic slide guitarist and I studied his playing for years. He more than bridged the gap from roots country blues to modern blues/rock. He was the whitest black man I've known.

Re: RIP Johnny Winter

Yeah, that's a huge loss. That great gig in the sky just keeps getting better, though!

Regarding the Grammy snub, I don't think they were into the rock thing back then. Consider that The Who, Beach Boys, Queen, The Doors, and Jimi Hendrix - JIMI F'ING HENDRIX - don't have Grammies. And Led Zeppelin only received one a few years ago for their reunion show live album (with Jason Bonham). And Bob Marley, too (they didn't add a reggae category until after his death). So I don't think the lack of a Grammy says much about Johnny.

You're absolutely right, but the list of people you mentioned who haven't won does say a lot about the Grammy committee.
